ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A civilian pilot shot down while flying a sheriff's helicopter in Albuquerque is recovering from his third surgery since crash-landing Saturday.
Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White called Chris Holland a hero for being able to land 15 feet from a house.
Holland, a veteran combat pilot of the Gulf War, is also a lawyer. He finished a tour in Iraq as a legal officer in February.
White said a single bullet shattered one of the chopper's control pedals, which disintegrated, wounding Holland and disabling the aircraft. White said had the bullet not hit the pedal, it would have struck Holland in the chest.
A deputy with Holland received minor injuries.
White said the shooting does not appear connected to a burglary call to which Holland was responding. No one has been arrested.
