FORT WORTH, Texas -- A Denton County man is dead after opening fire on police Tuesday night following a police chase.

Police said Brian Doyle Savage, 37, led officers from several agencies on a chase through the northern parts of the Metroplex after refusing to pull over for Denton County sheriff's deputies.

Savage finally came to a stop when he arrived at his home on Smiley Road in Northeastern Denton County. He then opened fire on them, shooting State Trooper Stephen Oliver in the leg
, and barricaded himself in his home, police said.

Oliver underwent surgery on Wednesday morning to repair damage to his femur and is currently listed in good condition.

Tom Reedy with the Denton County Sheriff's Office said Savage would intermittently fire at police from inside the home with a rifle and pistol and at one time appeared in the doorway with a scoped rifle. Officials called in negotiators and after establishing contact with Savage learned that his wife and childeren were not in the house.

Reedy also said that interviews with friends, co-workers and family members indicated that Savage had been using methamphetamines for the past two weeks.

Around midnight Savage broke off contact with negotiators and continued to shoot at police.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Savage again opened the front door and fired a shot at the officers. A Denton County Tactical officer responded and shot at Savage once, striking his gun. Savage stepped back and then raised the rifle, which was later determined to be an SKS assault rifle with a large capacity magazine, and the officer shot him again, this time striking him in the left shoulder.

Reedy said officers then moved in to secure the scene, and Savage was still resisting with the rifle lying beside him. Officers used a Taser gun to subdue Savage and end the standoff.

Savage was transported by Careflight to Methodist Hospital in Dallas where he was later pronounced dead by the Dallas County Medical Examiner shortly after 3 a.m.

Savage was wanted in Denton county for theft by check, Reedy said.

The officer who shot Savage is on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation by the Texas Rangers.

Technically an SKS isn't an assault rifle right?

Glad the LEO is ok.

He dies from a shot in the shoulder? Wow. Blood loss and lack of treatment?

What does it matter what type of gun he was using? Had he shot the officer with a .38 snubby, a 9mm, a 12 gauge or an SKS, does it really make a difference? The story here should be that some idiot criminal decided to shoot a cop, not what friggin gun he used.

Funny there's so much detail on the gun he was using but nothing about the only gun that did any actual killing.  What did the cop use?  Why no details on that?  I thought the mere presence of an assault rifle was deadly?  Surely a mere handgun wasn't more deadly...
