I personally do not like the "rubber band" or "flex" machines, I prefer the good old fashioned free weights.

However that being said, I do like the Body Solid line of home gyms.  I have the EXM3000LPM at my home and it is a very good home gym!  More money than you want to spend but Body Solid does have less expensive models.

Here is a link to their site:

I can see buying a home gym when you can just go for walks ever day if you goal is to lose weight.

Or do push up or something.

That was what i was going to do and my wife suggested a home gym so she could use it too.  i already walk and run.  Weight is not an issue w/ me.

Here is a suggestion.

If you  are looking to build muscle for about learning what the Marines do.

Tell the wife it cost you $1000 for this info since it is the best info around.

Then go buy her some flowers and yourself a new rifle.

I suggest a M1A

Yes, the take your new M1A and new found knowledge up ointo the woods and wrok out.

And since you already walk try walking with a 30lbs backpack. It will exersize a whole differant group of muscles and REALLY test your endurance.

Drink plenty of water....1 gallon/hour
