SEOUL, South Korea (Reuters) -- A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing online battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play on-line games on August 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

If he was playing Half-Life 2, the excitement of the game probably had him going and the shock from such a shitty ending is what did him in.

I remember a similar story, but the other guy had done it for 72+ hours.  They figured he died of a DVT.

If that is a racial slur just a friendly heads up it will get you banned, even if you didn't try to offend some one.

It's better me letting you know than the mods and than staff

I would guess something like Age of Titans or Warcraft. Asians aren't as big on FPS games.

Edit to say that my friends have went almost that long playing Counter-Strike: Source at my house. I, however, get bored after about 6 or so hours and go to bed.

Rang rangs isnt a racial slur.  Its more like calling koreans nerds.

Its really an inside joke to people who play everquest/world of warcraft.

Yeah he was probably camping a spawn area waiting for that 1 out of a million monster to spawn so he could get a special item. I did that once. Took a whole week of vacation to get it. Of course I did sleep a few hours each night though. Glad I broke my self of the gaming habit. I have not played anything in a couple years.

The guy was playing starcraft.  Did you know that they actually televise that over there?  People seriously have sponsors and it is a huge spectator sport.  I saw the number of starcraft games sold per capita once and it was phenomenal.  If I remember correctly something like one in 3 people owned a legitimate copy.
