you'll be asleep for the procedure.  It'll hurt after, tho.

Get a few cans of ensure now, and get some pudding.  Trust me on this one.

There is almost no general anestesia being used in dentist offices anymore, much more risky and you usually have to have someone drive you home.

When I had my front teeth replaced I just had a local.

I told the cute Iranian dental surgeon who did my root canal that she can punch me, shoot me, do an anal probe without anesthesia but you better make sure I'm numb before you stick a needle directly into a nerve in my head.

I was on gas, muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety meds, and shot full o' local narcs in a couple of minutes.

I've had two, one courtesy of the fine Navy dental corps and one by the VA.  The one the Navy did was a big deal, as they were just learning how to do it and hurt like hell when they punched the implant into my sinus.  Note!  The workup x-rays showed that was a possibility, and all was well after that healed.
It was a bit exciting, though, to feel and hear a loud crack and have the whole mob of Bethesda dentists say "oops".

The most recent at the VA was the fastest and easiest surgery I've had.  The whole process took a few months but went like clockwork.

What sort of tooth are they putting on the post?  I understand (and can vouch for) the cemented on type is the best.  If you bite any bullets or other hard item, the tooth/cement will (hopefully) fail before the implant.

As far as pain, not as bad a root canal.  It's the gums that take the beating, but it does ache for a while.

Terminator Teeth!

I have enough(implants) to qualify to answer the question as, NO. Just like getting sutures, the first needle will pinch, the rest is east street. Don't sweat it.

Unless your Dentist sucks. Then your in deep poo/poo.

ETA, All mine were done with local, I was awake.

Somehow I suspect I'll be getting implants some day.

I hope to hell the price comes down.  If I recall correctly I priced my molars at $25,000 a few years ago.

Wifey had 3 done, front teeth (from an accident) +1 next to the front teeth. Looks natural and she said it wasn't that big of a deal. You should be pleased with the results. Good Luck!

My mom has them, and she was chewing on something hard(I forget what at the moment) and broke it. They are not quite as strong as natural teeth.

Dude,

I'm an ice hockey plater, as such I have no original equipment left in my mouth...It's all fake... To say I put my Dentist's kids through Grad school would be an understatetement. Anyway, once you get the local you'll feel absolutely no pain (if administered correctly). If after the local you still feel some pain, ask them to give you some more local anesthetic........Other than that i would suggest that you start taking an anti inflammatory (I prefer Motrin) several hours before the procedure, it will cut down on the post-op swelling and pain (please check with your dentist first to be sure its alright to do so).......Other than that salt water gargles will help also.......
