I'm thinking about bumping up my RAM on my PC.

Dell Dimension 4600
P4 @ 2.4ghz
512mb ram
60g hd
4g max ram (2 banks of 2)

Crucial has a 1gig kit for $137.99 or a 2gig kit for $273.99

Will I notice a difference going from 512 to 1gig ??? 2gig ???

$138 seems pretty reasonable... $274 is a bit much tho...

Any suggestions ?

Unless you are doing high end stuff, like graphic or movie editing, or high end gaming, 1g is plenty

I'd have to agree.

The jump from 256 to 512 is big.

The jump from 512 to 1gig is OK

The jump from 1gig to 2gig is almost nothing.

Seeing a pattern?

I have Doom3 and it seems like it's a little slow...  Could be my vid card tho...
Also, When I play DOD (Day of Defeat) online the 'puter sometimes crashes, like it's overwhelmed.

Well, DOOM3 could use the boost, and your video card should be at least 128 if not 256 and Direct X 9 minimum.

I also have a Dell inspirion 7500 laptop @ 650mhz and 256mb ram...
Would I notice a big difference bumping THAT to 512 ?

It will, but not enough to justify upgrading a dinosaur. Laptops are terrible to upgrade, it's cost effective to buy new when it comes to laptops.

I played DOD for 2 years on a computer with half the power of yours and I didnt have any trouble.
Except for a soundblaster driver that was locking the computer up on selection screens.   Point is, your computer isnt crashing because of your hardware, unless your card sucks.  10 to 1 its a software issue.
Steam has many little bugs with certain systems.  Read steampowered forums for tips.

Oh yeah the 9600se sucks.  I had the 9600xt and that thing was a tough little card for the money.
