Didn't the number of the beast get downgraded to 636 or something like that?

Not that I'm aware of.

Revelation 13:18 (New International Version)

18This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.

Light as air here.  Me thinks you're projecting.

Quiting my dead end job and going back to college in a week and a half.  You'd be hard pressed to find a man in a better mood.

I thought the translation was where the mistake was.  AFAIK the original wasn't in English.

"616" according to the oldest version of the bible discovered to date.

Shouldn't this be posted in the "religion" forum?

I think he's referring to this:
link

"This is a very nice piece to find," Dr. Aitken said. "Scholars have argued for a long time over this, and it now seems that 616 was the original number of the beast."

The tiny fragment of 1,500-year-old papyrus is written in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, and contains a key passage from the Book of Revelation.

Where more conventional versions of the Bible give 666 as the "number of the beast," or the sign of the anti-Christ whose coming is predicted in the book's apocalyptic verses, the older version uses the Greek letters signifying 616.

There is no "newly discovered" number.

All such rumors are completely false.

The Number of the Beast is "666", just as it always has and always will be.

I think the debate is about the translation from common Greek, not whether or not you can read the translated version that is in English (everyone does realize it wasn't originally in English...right?).

Thanks.  Doesn't take a iron set of nads though when you're getting a scholarship from the Society of Dad & Mom giving you a second chance you don't deserve, but it's pretty sweet none the less.
