I've never had the chance to see a B2 in person, so I'm really suprised how small they are when compared to an F15. THought they'd be a lot bigger.
Nope, the f-15s 'hide' behind the b-2!!! |
I had never seen one in person until my ROTC detachment visited Whiteman(sp?) AFB. It's a huge airplane, dimension wise it's not a monster compared to say, a B-1, but the thing is because of it's shape it has a giant area, it's deceptive how big it is. |
Come to think of it...F15s aren't exactly tiny either. |
Yes - but wait till the F-22s are escorting!! |
And Jack Northrop was a fucking genius!!!
XB-35 Flying wing… (1943) Wing Span: 172 feet B2 Spirit… (1992) Wing Span: 172 feet It took 60 years to get there but get there they did! |
Jack Northrup got the credit. Frank Morrison birthed the concept. |
Yeah...notice the prominence, near the windscreen, of the relevent instruments, Artificial Horizon, TBI, V-speed indicator, and compass. Not much visibility, eh? |
The first one I saw flew right over me on final into Hill AFB. It had to get really close before I realized what it was. I have to say, as George Kostanza said after the massage, "It moved, Jerry." C-5s and C-17s up close give me wood, too. It's just impressive to see what our country can achieve. |
Best thing is the 1st pic, the Herk in the background really makes it the best pic of them all
Something has to escort the tanker that feeds it... |
I had one pass a few hundred feet above me on landing approach and it was the loudest plane I've ever heard. I would compare it to the three F4's in full afterburner that once passed a few hundred feet above me on take-off. |
you guys are welcome.
now as to why it is being escorted could have to do with it being daylight and it is a 20 billion dollar aircraft. could you imagine what the b-2 with the f-22 as an escort could do to certain countries military power. |
It was moving at subsonic speed when it passed over me and it was quiet as well. You wouldn't have known it was there until the bombs were on you even at that low altitude. |
hey dp can you imagine what it can do with 150 small diamater bombs with gps ouch. wipe out a few city blocks at least. SMB 250lber |
They're retrofitting F-15s with Romulan cloaking devices. |
By that reasoning there's no reason to design any aircraft with any more visibility than a submarine. I guess Lindy had it right with the Spirit. |

I've seen a B2 at Edwards during one of their Open House airshows.
The B2 isn't small, it's just that the F15 that is freaking huge as well. The damned F15 and F14s are just behemoths. |
wow. It never dawned on me that bombers still use escort... I'm an idiot. I always pictured these big SAC guys going it alone for 30 hours..... Do they take fighter escort the whole way to the sandbox when they go?

While the B-2 is awesome, no doubt, I still think the B-one is the sexiest beast in the air.
want me to get you a bone picture got a few |
Better not, I may need to get up and walk around the office in a few minutes. That could be embarrassing. |
ok i will post them later check back after work. |
i repeat i had nothing to do with the bone pic sweet pic though
And an F-15 is nearly 60' in length. |
The real reason for this B2 and it's escort picture....they're both stuck at Anderson AFB for four months and it gives the PA guys something to do.
Me too...Dru Blair rocks. |
People, think photo op in the first couple of picks. The B2 would NOT be escorted by NON stealth fighters, and esp. not F15 Mudbugs. Those F15s are ground attack aircraft.
Cool pics tho. EDIT TO Clarify: I know the B2 is not escorted in combat. I was just saying of all the aircraft in the US inventory, the F15E would be at the bottom of the list. Sheesh. |
are those the high res pics? |
