How about this - when the US started work on the F-22, you could still buy a Commodore 64 computer at Walmart.

Considering the F/A-22 is just ever so slightly more advanced then Russias SU-37's which are going to China.... Yeah, they need to upgrade the Raptor!

not really, there were many different variants of the P-38 as the designed was improved, some of which never saw combat

THe "Super Flankers" are no better than the "Super Hornets"...both are just 1970s era aircraft with a few hardware add ons and a software boost. We should add a "SUPER" to the Raptor...then it will *&^&ing PWN!11!!

Speaking of that...ANdy, are the Brits only interested in the VSTOL version of the F-35...is there new carrier going to be able to handle the naval version?

Actually the Royal Navy would be perfectly happy to get the FA-18E, it was the runner up in the progam to select the next RN/RAF fighter.

The new carriers should be able to handle both. They will be built with all the structure in place to take catapults. They are slated to get the new US electro-magnetic catapults when they are available from 2014.

Latest design looks like this… 65,000 tons, 45 F-35's plus 4 helos and 4 AWACS, which will be either an EH101 Merlin helo variant or a V-22 Osprey variant.

Rear island is the dedicated FLYCO… they found in trials that having a seperate 'control tower' allows better control of the flight deck and a much better field of vision.

Well, not hardly.

What is it about modern airplanes that you think distinguishes a 1970's airplane and a 2005 airplane? I'll tell you - it's the avionics and processing power. And maybe bigger motors (like that's an innovation!).

You guys really need to read the article, the only they are talking about that is be upgraded is the CNI system. There is a very good reason that the system needs to be upgraded................

When I clicked on that link I got this gem.

When you think about it, it isn't surprising that the peaceful Canadians would set such a military record, operating an airplane they first took possession of in 1965 (they got earlier B models, which have since been replaced, in 1960). They simply have no money for newer equipment, so they tighten their belts and make do, relying on high-quality people to make up for old equipment and low numbers.

The Canadian military continues to shrink. It has reached the point that tiny Denmark periodically visits and plants its flag on Canadian-claimed Hans Island between Greenland and Newfoundland, and Canada can't resist. (Perhaps because there is no C-130 suitable landing zone on the bleak island; the Danes revert to Viking type and come in small boats). The island has no intrinsic value, but the 200-mile territorial zone around it is of interest to both nations. And the emotional impact is great. Imagine if the Japanese seized a couple of the Aleutians, or Argentines occupied the Falklands -- er, never mind.

Denmark is puffing their chests at Canada! Bwa ha ha ha!
