I hadnt rented "Stand by Me" in over 10-years. I finished watching it an hour ago and got all teary eyed. Its a real sad ending and I've included the final script below.

<<As Vern walks away he finds a coin in the street and bends down to pick it up. He holds it up to show his friends as he walks away.>>

Well, guys—I better get home before my mom puts me on the Ten Most Wanted list.
<<Teddy starts to walk away, but stops and turns around.>>
Hey, Chris. No hard feelings, okay?

Chris:
     

No way, man.

Teddy:
     

<<Teddy begins walking away in another direction. As he walks he begins to sing.>>

Writer:
     

As time went on we saw less and less of Teddy and Vern, until eventually they became just two more faces in the halls. It happens sometimes. Friends come in and out of your life like busboys in a restaurant. I heard that Vern got married out of high school, had four kids, and is now the forklift operator at the Arsenault lumberyard. Teddy tried several times to get into the Army, but his eyes and ear kept him out. The last time I'd heard, he'd spent some time in jail. He was now doing odd jobs around Castle Rock.

Chris:
     

<<The last two boys continued walking together, but now it was time for them to part also. They are standing on the hill next to their tree house, overlooking Castle Rock.  Chris seems sad.>>
I'm never gonna make it out of this town, am I, Gordie.

Gordie:
     

You can do anything you want, man.

Chris:
     

Yeah, sure.
<<Pause.>>
Gimme some skin.

Gordie:
     

I'll see you.

Chris:

<<Chris walks away and as the Writer is talking about Chris' fate, Chris' image fades and disappears from the screen. The adventure is over, and life must go on, even without Chris Chambers.>>

Writer:
     

Chris did get out. He enrolled in the college courses with me, and, although it was hard, he gutted it out like he always did. He went on to college and eventually became a lawyer. Last week he entered a fast food restaurant. Just ahead of him, two men got into an argument—one of them pulled a knife. Chris, who had always made the best peace, tried to break it up. He was stabbed in the throat. He died almost instantly.

Although I hadn't seen him in more than ten years, I know I'll miss him forever.

WSon:

I remember in grade school reading "Something for Joey" a story about Penn State football player John Cappelletti and his brother Joey who is dying of leukemia.  I bawled and bawled after reading that.  A few years later they came out with the movie and I saw it.  I bawled and bawled after that.  I hate sad movies.  I won't watch them anymore.

Now nearly all those I loved and did not understand when I was young are dead, but I still reach out to them.
    Of course, now I am too old to be much of a fisherman, and now of course I usually fish the big waters alone, although some friends think I shouldn't. Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise.
   Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
    I am haunted by waters.

For some reason, it always makes me tear up seeing the end to that movie.




The other one, which I am deeply ashamed about, is the ending to Vanilla Sky.

The whole thing makes me so sad.

It is such a Catch 22.

Holy cow, I am so thankful that the Mrs. and decided to rent it instead of seeing it at the theater.

By the end of film we were just a total mess.

American Beauty was pretty sad.  I recently saw Million Dollar Baby.  That was just all-around sad.  I was hoping she'd make peace with her family, but they really sucked so it's good that she cut them off.  I can't imagine what it would have been like to be her.

The only movie that I have seen people sit in the theater and cry after it ended was Saving Private Ryan. I'd say the two times I saw it in the theater that 5-10% of the people did not leave for 15 minutes (I know, I was with someone who couldn't stop crying for at least that)

I LOVED the ending of Arlington Road!  The good guys always win in the end in movies, it's refreshing when that isn't the case.  The best endings are when the bad guys get away or the hero fails/doesn't live happily ever after.  Like Goodfellas or The Usual Suspects.

Another one that really got me unexpectedly was "AI".

The Sand Pebbles.

A Simple Plan- with billy bob thornton, bill paxton, and bridget fonda.  not a tearjerker per se, but almoist unbearably tragic.  a great movie that most people have never seen.  highly reccomended.

+1, I forgot about that movie, its a great one. In the same vein is "A Midnight Clear" (I think thats what its called)

The Sand Pebbles and Gallipoli (with a slight edge to the latter) get my top vote right now (I'm sure I think of something later). Stand By Me is pretty depressing, too.

I couldn't get the end of that movie out of my head for days.  It was the most depressing film I've ever seen in my life.

The Passion of the Christ put pretty much the whole theatre in tears several times, myself and my date, along with a group of others went with a bunch of Gentiles (yes, I will use this word in this instance! ) to go see it, and it put us in tears probably worse then most of them I think.
