Former Northampton school chief pleads to gun charges

August 2, 2005

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. --Former Northampton Superintendent Michael A. Cosgriff was sentenced to a year's probation Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to improperly storing his guns.

With the case behind him, Cosgriff will now be able to start a new job heading the Lincoln Woodstock Cooperative School District in New Hampshire, his lawyer said.

Cosgriff, 55, was arrested in June 2004 following a domestic incident at his Southampton home. When police went into his house, they found two rifles and a shotgun that were not locked up and did not have trigger locks -- a violation of state gun laws.

"We felt that the disposition was in the best interest of justice," said Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Dunphy Farris. "He was treated just like any other gun owner in this case."

Members of the Lincoln Woodstock school board have said they still believe Cosgriff is the best candidate to run their schools. However, the board had put his appointment on hold until he settled the criminal case.

Cosgriff's lawyer, David Hoose, said he expected his client to take over the new job soon.

Had this guy not been some .gov official, he would be doing time, or have lost his job and lots of $$$$ in legal fees. And, anybody else in education, esp. teachers, would have been bounced out of the profession for this, esp. in NE.

George Orwell was right: some animals are more equal than others.
