I've hunted in a lot of places and currently looking to hunt Alaska.  Specifically black bear, since the season remains open from late summer through the winter months. I usually prefer hunting in the winter, less idiots and more pros.  In addition, I have substantial winter survival preparation from the military, so I dont mind severe weather.  Actually, I prefer it.

I've been to a few places that require a guide; which I would not want to do. I specifically like to hunt ALONE. Meaning no guides.

If anyone has any links for good hunting areas, please let me know. I'm looking for either alpine deer or black bear. Maybe something more.

I'd like to be dropped off and picked up a week later or perhaps kayak into the zone.  If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know. I'm looking at going in December.

Thanks, Mayday.

I live in Ketchikan, "next door" to Prince of Wales island....great bear hunting there! The Sitka black tailed deer are plentiful, but on the small side.

Hmmm, I'll look up the province. In the meantime, how low does the temp get there in late December?

He said Prince of Wales Island, in Alaska.  Not Prince Edward Island, in Canada.

Tag for later . I gotta check the books , but I think you are SOL for the guide based on residency  .

You MUST have a guide if you are not a resident. It is law.

SE Alaska is richest in black bears.  Around Juneau would be a good bet.  They infest that town.

But you can hunt black bears in the East, can't you?  Why not go for game unavailable in the East?  There are grizzlies inthe same basic area as Juneau.
