After reading this post www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=245198 (best of luck with that, Hooahkill) I thought I'd share my tip of the day with everybody.

I find the best way to keep track of serial numbers is to put them in cyberspace. you can put them on a site with virtual storage, or even send yourself an email with all the serial numbers. For one thing,  the house can burn down and you still have them handy. Say you drove to TX and some asshole steals your .45 from the glovebox on his way to pinching your stereo. You can give the police the SN in minutes, rather than have to go home in a few days, dig it up and report it later. Granted, there is a hack security risk to the tin foil hat crowd but you can also just print the numbers and cryptic abbreviations like "BM20/L285451"  instead of "BUSHMASTER AR-15, Serial number L285451". It's a great convenience for a dreadfully inconvenient situation, and good peace of mind to boot.

Sounds like a simple case of too much free time, or too few firearms.

One other suggestion, for those guys who carry them around or would consider it, is to store the serial number on those USB memory sticks.

Well, all you really need is a .38 and a 10/22

Or....you could just scratch the number off, then replace them with a number that is easier to remember.
