I do menial work all day. I have a lot of good old paperbound (3 bookshelves worth), but I can't do stupid menial work and read at the same time.  Try it, it is quite nifty.  I have Atlas Shrugged as 60 hours of MP3 if you wanna give it a shot, easier than the microprinted book.

I read Gates of Fire when it first came out and really enjoyed it. I didn't know it was being made into a movie. Hopefully, Hollywood doesn't screw it up too bad. |

read it, along with Rand's others, my menial job is only do able if I read paperbacks all day, electronic devices would be nearly impossible for me.

the funniet part about the "gay secret of Sparta" was listening to some Fedcoat jackass on CSPAN talking about homosexuals in the military and he capped off his speech with, "And what would the SPARTANS think about THAT!?"

I probably will buy the book.
Factual history is the only way I like my history. Problem is that many historical facts get glossed over by authors not wanting to offend the sensibilities of modern civilization. I also don't care for the lurid expose type works by dwelling on the more unsavory practices of history. I also find it ironic how after reading arfcom since '98, that quite a few members like to view themselves as some sort of modern Spartan and admire the historical Spartans, have no clue of thier proclivity for butt secks.  |

It is A good book, I did it for a school project. I didn't really care for the back story and prefered when it talked about training and tatics. Probably because thats what I like most about spartans, their tatics. In for those who like Halo Gates of fire gives more information that helps make the connection between the two univereses. (Being future and past Spartians)

Patton was know the think highly of Alexander, does a person's (or in this case a nation's) sexuality color their accomplishments? Carrying the train of thought farther, perhaps purely hetero people may not have been able to maintain the Spartan ideal due to a lack of philos.

I read this book earlier this year based on the recommendation of someone here, good book. There was at most passing reference to homosexuality in the book.
