quote]By Cassandra Vinograd The Associated Press BIRMINGHAM, England - Former President Carter said Saturday that the detention of terrorism suspects at the Guantanamo Bay Naval base was an embarrassment and had given extremists an excuse to attack the United States. Carter also criticized the U.S.-led war in Iraq as "unnecessary and unjust." "I think what's going on in Guantanamo Bay and other places is a disgrace to the U.S.A.," he told a news conference at the Baptist World Alliance's centenary conference in Birmingham, England. "I wouldn't say it's the cause of terrorism, but it has given impetus and excuses to potential terrorists to lash out at our country and justify their despicable acts." Carter said, however, that terrorist acts could not be justified, and that while Guantanamo "may be an aggravating factor ... it's not the basis of terrorism." Critics of President Bush's administration have long accused the U.S. government of unjustly detaining terrorism suspects at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base on the southeastern tip of Cuba. Hundreds of men have been held indefinitely at the prison without charges or access to lawyers. "What has happened at Guantanamo Bay ... does not represent the will of the American people," Carter said. "I'm embarrassed about it; I think it's wrong. I think it does give terrorists an unwarranted excuse to use the despicable means to hurt innocent people." Carter recently called for the Guantanamo prison to be shut down, saying reports of abuses there are an embarassment to the United States. He also said that the United States needs to make sure that no detainees are held incommunicado and that all are told the charges against them. Carter, who won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, has been an outspoken critic of the Iraq war. "I thought then, and I think now, that the invasion of Iraq was unnecessary and unjust. And I think the premises on which it was launched were false," he said Saturday. The Baptist World Alliance, comprising more than 200 Baptist unions around the world, was formed in London in 1905. The alliance, which meets in a different location every five years, moved its headquarters to the United States in 1947. An estimated 12,700 delegates gathered in the city of Birmingham in central England for the conference. Carter, a Sunday school teacher in his hometown of Plains, Ga., was expected to lead a Bible study lesson during the conference. He praised British police and intelligence services for the swift arrests in connection with the unsuccessful July 21 bombing attempts on London's transit system. "I'm very proud to be in a nation that stands so stalwart against terrorism with us," he said. "The people of my country have united our hearts and sympathy for the tragedy that you have suffered from terrorism." I wonder what rock was he under? Was he the Prez that was pushed around by the Iranian and couldn't solve the hostage situation in Iran UNTIL Prez Reagan took over presidency? I thought so. |

Carter should STFU, take some pills and build some houses fro the homeless. Anything else he does or says is inconsequential.
Anything short of bending over and grabbing his ankles is overly aggressive for Jimmah. Even at a kid, I was humiliated to have him as my president.
He sickens me. |
carter was a typical punk arse liberal who had trouble standing up to anything more then a boiled peanut. I do not remember the years he spent in office with optimism. Heck the guy was always gloom and doom, gave away the farm [panama canal] the only good thing about his prez was his brother was a hoot. He was a pres I never respected past his office, and I personally do not care if the guy build houses til the cows come home in atonement. He's nothing but a pawn of the left.

Former Pres. Carter is a terrorist sympatizer and should be arrested till this war is over.

I hate to say it but I would laugh at the irony if carter was tortured and killed by the terrorists that he so loves
If Carter had show just a little more backbone in the '70's, we might not have had to start fighting terrorist on our own soil in the '90's
Agreed. Most of the popular (favorable) Prez have very good, strong foreign policy. Prez. Bush will be another one when it all said and done. |
Carter was the Prez who first cited "Human Rights" B.S. that allowed the commies to kill dissedents freely because it was their human right to do so.
Carter can easily make it in the top 5 worst presidents ever.
Considering his record on terrorism, he should shut the fuck up.
Slink back to obscurity, Jimmy. You'll do the most good there.
Yeah. like his terrorism policies worked. In the terrorists favor.
Second guessing Bush is like the "pot calling the kettle black." But I guess since he's a Dem, the liberal news media will always give him a forum for his rantings and ravings. He had his chance and he blew it.
Yeah, Jimmy, because the first and second WTC attacks, the Cole, the U.S. embassy bombings happened because of Gitmo.
Hell, I remember the orginal Marine hymn before they omitted the part about Gitmo during their Tripoli campaign! FOAD, Carter. |

A Day of Terror Recalled
Saturday, November 27 2004 @ 04:28 PM Central Standard Time Cameron W. Barr - 1979 Embassy Siege In Islamabad Still Haunts Survivors. Marine Master Sgt. Loyd G. Miller stood in the lobby of the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, and deployed his troops. Outside the locked gate of the 32-acre embassy compound, bus after bus after bus disgorged crowds of student protesters. "Kill the American dogs," some shouted. Miller had five Marines under his command; he sent two to the embassy's roof to assess the demonstration. He watched with growing anxiety as protesters pulled down part of the compound's outer wall and surged inside. He heard gunshots. He knew the members of his Marine security guard detachment were not authorized to fire. He ran to the roof to see what was happening. Cpl. Steven J. Crowley was slumped over, bleeding from a bullet wound above his left ear. Miller helped carry the unconscious Marine into the building. Staff members headed for the embassy's steel-encased communications rooms, a secure area known as "the vault." It was a little after lunchtime on Nov. 21, 1979. In a day of orchestrated anti-American outrage, Pakistanis were attacking several U.S. facilities across the country. Twenty-five years later, this outburst seems a thin slice of history, sandwiched between the taking of U.S. hostages in Iran and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Officially, Nov. 21 was quickly forgotten, seen by the United States as an aberration in its complex but generally productive relationship with Pakistan. For many of the people who endured the embassy attack and its aftermath, these events linger, called to mind each year as Thanksgiving approaches. "I came away from that with a really deep understanding of the hostility that other nations hold toward America," said Beth Rideout, who as a high school senior was Crowley's girlfriend. Some survivors have resolved to help make the United States stronger. Others wish that Americans were wiser about the rest of the world. In the years after the events of Sept. 11, 2001, that wish has sometimes turned to despair. My own frustration -- great frustration -- with America is that it continues to be so inward looking, so negligent of the world," said Raymond L. Rideout, Beth's father. In 1979, he was acting principal of the International School of Islamabad, which was also attacked by anti-American demonstrators. "Americans seem not to have a clue about how the world thinks." Article continues here... www.pakistan-facts.com/article.php?story=20041127162812932 Carter was president then. Why couldn't he solve the problems then? Perhaps he has no clues?? Fullclip |

No sh!t. He couldn't do anything when he was in. Now he wants to muck up the water when he's out. |
Die you old GD commie!! Die! God I hate that bastard. Why in hell does Fox even waste time on that Fonda loving POS. He is the devil.....a zombie devil!!!!
He think he has had the "experience" as an "elder statesman". Riiiggghttt...... |
Jimmah's own slogan, "walk Small and Carry some Straw" he was not Teddy Roosevelt.
He was the same POS that stripped down the military down to practically nothing and left a huge mess for Reagan to clean up.
carter was a COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE in all regards of his presidency. i'd dare say he ranks with the worst failed administrations in history.
his advise and critcism is something that should NEVER be taken seriously. if he is unhappy we are obviously doing well. |
Ahh yes...Jimmy Carter: the man who when giving the go ahead to the failed Iranian hostage rescue attempt requested that our soldiers have their weapons loaded with rubber bullets so that they wouldn't actually have to kill the hostage takers!
It's said he was quite disappointed when he was told that his request was infeasible. |
My father was in the Army right after the Carter admin and he said that one of Carter's old policies was that soldiers when in foreign countries were permitted to load their M16's with only 1 round so it wouldn't offend hostile groups. He also said that our equipment was outdated and it was Reagan that fixed these problems.
I was in the Marines during Carter's tenure. What a POS. Complete and utter failure as President. 4 years of that and I couldn't wait to get out. |
man, you hit the nail on the head! From my perspective (and I know it's unfair since hindsight is 20/20,) but Carter could have prevented a lot of death by adopting the Bush doctrine way back then! |
Terrorists don't have any negotiable points as Blair said. Changing the governments and killing terrorists is our present tactic. Iraq had just as many or more terrorists when Saddam was in charge. The only difference was that they were police and military under his direction.
Carter's just plain wrong. We should talk to terrorists when they're begging to talk to us and not before. His style just gives credence to thugs like Castro and Chavez and their crappy socialist systems. |
A Big +1 |
Are you serious? |
That nailed it!!!!!! Damn sad situation. |
I was in the Army during carter's reign. One year my unit's funding was so low that we had to buy
(or acquire by other means) our own damn toilet paper. Oh well, at least you could liberate a roll of tp from a bar or fast-food place. Ammo and vehicle parts? Now that's a little harder. |
BINGO! |
Carter is the worst Prez, I met him once, during a time I was Democrat, LOL I have soince acknowledged my conservative values, his handshake impressed me as wimpy!!!
I also know a Gunny, his buddy was a Gunny at the Embassy, he said they Marines coulds have helld until the rescue team arrived, That POS President abandoned them and the United States solely to placate the world and his candy assed liberal buddies. |
Now how the hell Carter expected soldiers to fight when there were not enough equipments and fundings???? Harsh language?!?!?! Damn shame. |
As a heart attack. |
