Got to work on Sunday around 1400, the cashier at the front counter of one of the tenants gives me the, "Sure could have used you earlier" spiel.
Turns out he was showing a set of walkie talkies to a customer and looked away to answer another customer's question. The customer with the walkie talkies fled out the entrance (one way doors, she waited until someone else entered the store) and left in a waiting cars. Staff at the store got pics of her on surveillance tape, and a description of the car including the plate number. When they called the local PD (large agency) they were told that no one would respond because the $70 theft was <$100.  I asked about the customer who had entered (allowing the thief to exit) and the customer who had distracted the cashier. No one thought the other customers had a connection to the thief. Somedays I hate this job. |

I wouldn't even know which one to be more pissed about... the stolen walkie talkies, or the fact the PD won't even help you.

I can't even imagine a police department that won't respond. Both my agency and the one my wife works for have a policy: If someone wants a badge, they get one.

Why send an officer to the mall to investigate a $70 theft when he can sit beside the road and write a $210 ticket?

that's always been my experience v_g, this particular agency is getting run ragged tho.
I can understand not showing up for a jerk off shoplifting report, unk pers, desc, merch $, time date, etc but goddamn, they got the plate number and the bitch on tape. It's getting out of control. Was recently told by the same PD that they would not criminally trespass a person from the property unless all the tenants signed a letter in advance saying that they wouldn not do business with that person. Most of the tenants are corporate chains so they pass all that stuff up to corporate legal and won't handle it on site. From there the letters disappear. So now I can't even get rid of the vagrants pissing on the walls and sleeping in the bushes. PD will show up for that, but it's seriously down the list of calls, response time ranges from 45 minutes to over an hour. |

on a related note one of the pharmacy assistants drove down to another store today. when she got back in her car she noticed a door ding. she returned to work and called the PD. They dispatched a motor unit to take her report.

Just thought I'd throw this out:
Usually states have a monetary scale of damages that are used to determine the severity of the theft, i.e. less than $100 = misdemeanor, over $500 = gross mis., etc. What probably happened was the less-than-$100 mark made the offense low-level enough to where, realistically, little/nothing would have happened to the offender. It's the court system in this country, there are places where you literally can get off with almost anything. Believe it or not, this pisses off cops just as much as it does the public (besides the victims, they are usually/understandably the most distressed). Case in point: two LEO's from my city's department recently caught two kids trying to break into a pop machine cash box on school property. There was a crowbar at the scene of the crime, witnesses (if you count the cops), and the two kids both had taped confessions to the crime after being read their rights. End result? The city attorney didn't even charge the kids, because they said there was "not enough evidence". The legal system in this country is getting more and more asinine with every passing day. Should the cops have responded to your theft? Probably, yeah. Would anything have happened? Depending on your location/circumstances, probably not. |
