Here is the situation. I have a wonderful remmington .22-250 VSSF, but I can't really hold it well to shoot. I use it when I am on a bench or have a pair of sticks. They damn thing is just too heavy for me to shoot well offhand.

I would like something affordable and synthetic that I could use to hunt my coyotes and p-dogs, but that I can hold well enough to make a harder shot. I guess what I am getting at is something with a standard barrel. I looked on remington's websight at the model seven SS. Is that a good rifle?

My dad bought me a m7 a long time ago.  I use it on all sorts of vermin.  It shoots fairly well, the best groups run  just under 1" with my average being between 1" and 1 1/4".  If I were to invest some $$ into it I guess it would shoot better than that.  It is a great gun. I would seriously recommend it for what you are looking for, but don't get rid of that 22-250 either though.

If you want something to coyote hunt with I suggest you look into getting a Savage sporter wieght synthetic stock rifle. Thier priced right and damn accurate. For shootin prairie dogs your Remington will work just get a Harris bipod. If your wanting to walk around and shoot pds the Savage will more than do the job.

While probably toolight for what you want, I have one of those Mini-Mark X Mauser .223 rifles.  The action is sized specifically for the .223/7.62x39 class of cartridges.  Similar to the CZ mentioned.  It's a super light rifle, very compact, and has a fantastic trigger.  I put an old steel Weaver 4x on it (because I found the scope in a box which meant "free").  It's held really tight accuracy.  I haven't shot it over 100yds, but it was 1.5" groups at 100yds with Winchester whitebox.  It probably is too light for really long shots.

I bougth it instead of getting a 10/22.  I figured a .223 is a "22" rgiht?

Take a look at the CZ though.  It's priced well, and I haven't ran across any gun built in the Czech republic that was poorly made.

Model 7 is a good rifle.....
But my question is this.
Do you own an AR15?
If so,
Why a bolt gun for a .223?
The AR lock-up system in essence ensures "bolt-gun" accuracy...
And for the same price you pay for a dedicated bolt gun, you could get a 24" Stainless Varmint/Sniper AR Upper that will shoot as well as any bolt gun.

Ruger M77-VT or M77-VLE

From the factory, they come with a #2.25 2-stage trigger, wide beavertail forend, free-floated laminate stock. The VLE series (Law enforcement) also comes with a Harris Bi-pod.

At one time or another, I have had both in 308, and currently have my 2nd VLE in 308.  They do make both versions in 223 though.

I asked a similar question a couple of months ago.  My dad was looking for a good 223 for some coyote busting.  After reading some suggestions here and seeing what was available locally, he decided on a Howa 1500.  I'd never seen one before, but I gotta tell you, that is one sweet rifle, especially considering the price.  One-piece synthetic stock and forearm and a 22" barrel.  Very light and handy and very accurate.  Stuck a 4-16x50 Bushnell on it (Thank you Midway) and it shoots great.  He got the rifle for about $350, and the scope for about $110, IIRC.  Not bad at all for what he got out of the deal.  (BTW, thanks to all who responded to my original post.)
