What do you guys think.

If the import ban is lifted, could Colt, Bushmaster, and Armalite compete with Diemaco, FN, and Armscor on a cost vs quality basis?

This is besides having to compete again with other kinds of AR, particularly the G36 and AUG at the high end and the AK and AN94 at the low end.  Any thoughts? Opinions?

It would be difficult, but I believe that the American companies could still compete (although they would really have to show more support towards the civilian market).

It would hurt for a short time.  It will bring the number of sales up to the roof.  In the long term, everything will stabilize into each niche marketplace.  Everyone is still going to buy a AR, FAL, M1A, AUG, G36, and etc........

Who do you think would survive?  I would say Colt because of its government contracts, not because it makes the best guns.

I personally don't see them ever selling a AN94 on the civilian market, because the gun shoots two round burst with one pull of the trigger, plus this feature is built right into the gun using a reciprocating barrel. I would like to have a G36 though(Not a SL8).

It depends on customer loyality.  Colt would be around because of name brand recoginition.  Government contracts would be go for them.  Bushmaster has a core group of followers.  Armalite can witther the storm since they have a different market segement that they have established.  The only companies would get slammed the most are the companies that builds up parts gun.

Colt lost their gov't contract. FN now makes them.

None of the imports could compete pricewise other than the AK's, but the current crop of cheap SAR's has not had any affect. If you want an AK you can get one cheap now. What importer could match the quality and capablity of, say, the LEGP for under $900?

The AR held its own back when the others could be imported, no reason to believe they couldn't now.

Of course, there is that NORINCO AR... but if it is built to the same high standards of the rest of the NORINCO weapons it would only place slighly above a HESSE in quality.

Thing is, even back in the 80's when they were legal, Dimaco, FN, and Armscor did not bother to import to the US.  They did not believe there was a market here.  They are not going to make that same mistake twice.  Even if the AR holds out against other types, what about against other AR-15's from overseas.  Armscore has a good product built on US made equipment and they save $$ on labor costs.  They could be tough competition.
