What is your ide controller? If it is limited to ATA66 go to WD site and download the utility to set the drives to ATA66.
Make sure you go into device manager and check the DMA box under the particular HD under Disk Drives. IDE hard drives have yet to realize a speed difference between ATA66 and ATA100 due to the physical parameters of the drive. |

The motherboard is designed to handle ATA100. I'm using Win2000, and the DMA option is turned on. Anything else I'm missing? I'm thinking about setting them up on the RAID controller, but I'm not sure how. This should improve performance, but I'm a little leary of doing it since I have no experience and the manual SUCKS!

update the chipset drivers. This is critical if you are using a VIA chipset.
Are these benchmarks that you are looking at or are you noticing an actual performance drop? |

What kind of cable are you using?
I may be mistaken but I believe ATA 100 requires a different cable (though the pinouts are the same). Also, there aren't any settings in the BIOS are there? Just a thought. |

I DL'ed a benchmark program after I noticed the extreme slow speed. I was transferring data over my network. When I did it to the new drives, it took over an hour. When I tried moving the same data to the older (Should be slower) drive it only took about 15mins!
I'm using the cable that came with the drives, and I've switched to a few other cables I have to check if that could have been the problem. Even if I don't have a ATA100 cable, the drive is performing much slower than a ATA33 drive. It just doesn't make sense.. [>:/] brouhaha |

A standard 40 pin 80 conductor cable should be the ticket. The BIOS should be set to auto-detect the drives.

Well guys, I guess this problem was just God's way of saying I needed to stripe the drives. I did so after a little tinkering. I couldn't figure out why the boot sequence said there were two drives in the array, but Windows2000 said there was only one. So, I kept re-doing the array thinking I had somehow mirrored them instead of striped them. Finally, I discovered Disk Manager. It said there were two drives in the array, but the other wasn't formatted. So, off to formatting I went. Now, the drives' access has risen from 2MB/sec to 58MB/sec! How's that for a speed increase. I'm so proud of myself, I think I'll buy a new gun this weekend at the show!
