Like I said in the other thread on this same topic, I thought we had a system for marking and tracing guns: SERIAL NUMBERS! What is the difference in what they want gunmakers to do now?

As I read it, the agreement calls for indelibly marking the firearm at the time and place of manufacture with serial number, manufacturer name, and date of production. How is this different from what is done now in the US? Also, there is provision for designated international agencies to access manufacturer's records in the same way that US police agencies do now. Does anyone seriously think that the BATF has refused to perform similar inquiries in the past for bona fide foreign police agencies? Again, how are things REALLY different now under this agreement. Finally, for those of you enraged at Ruger, will you also boycott Glock and Beretta, and will you sell off guns made by those manufacturers along with your Mini-14s?
Don't get in an uproar over a BS window-dressing agreement that does nothing new. |

How the **ll am I supposed to buy a six shooter from, 8lackmarket manufactures? I wonder if history will look back and ackowledge a date as to when all gun owners became agressive rather than passive criminals?

The records will be kept by the producers and be available to authorities through Interpol, according to the documents."
????? It appears the only thing that has changed is that someone else gets a list of the serial numbers of the firearms produced. As long as lists of names of those who purchased firearms isn't kept, this doesn't effect my RKBA or sense of privacy. Of course that may be the next step. |

Right now, the (US) law allows the inquiring agency to obtain the name of the distributor of the firearm in question. Cops must supply serial numbers first, then get distributor info. Giant list of serial no.s is not provided to cops by mfgr., nor is distributor info. Is initiated by cops on a gun-by-gun-basis.

I believe I said the same thing too. All that's changed is that they want them to add the year of manufacture to the serial number. Big deal! This information is already available. Basically what they are talking about is a standardized way of marking firearms with serial numbers. I can actually see some pros for prospective gunbuyers with such a system - if you know how to read such a serial number you'll know if the seller is lying about the age of the gun. |

The thing is that the manufacturer doesn't have lists of individuals who buy their products, unless they are dealers. We are a couple of steps removed from being on such a list. |

[left]yea they are. I had just sold a P89 ruger i did not like it, the slide start's to shoot loose after so many hundreds of rounds. when the rounds eject i got hit right in the eye's with them, and but last but not least they have horrible trigger's, way to long of pull.[/left] |
