It would be interesting to hear a dealers comments on this. However, this sounds reasonable but probably does not include private transfers, non ffl transfers, etc.

Remember, the AR-15 has been on the market for many years and they don't wear out. In addition there were several high sales years like 94 and 99, and they mosty likely don't include several of the small manufacturers live Cavalry Arms in those totals
Think 120,000x25 years of sales. |

120,000 in one year is pretty good. That was during the Y2K craze too, so my bets are that is unusually high for sales.
Were these newly manufactured AR-15s or used and new sold through FFLs? You didn't specify. If they are all new, and it seems from the way it is quoted that they were, that is a very high figure. |

That's 333.33333 a day, 7 days a week. From that perspective it sounds like alot. If you add the total sold from all of the other AR15 manufacturers that year the number would be a Hell of alot higher.

keep in mind also, i believe those were new rifles produced, not necessarily rifles sold to the public.
i would venture to say many more than that changed hands in 1999- think of all the prebans, etc. |

Actually, few police departments have bought ARs until the last 5 years or so. Not a lot of them felt it necessary to have rifles, and many chose the cheaper Mini-14 (groan).
120,000 is actually quite a high number. Most years won't be nearly that high, with 1993-4 probably coming in second. I'd guess that less than 50,000 NEW ARs were sold in 2000. The first real "explosion" of AR sales happened because of the '94 ban. Lots of people who would never have bought a "military" gun went out and bought an AR, because they were being banned. That put them in much wider circulation, and exposed more people to them, which created even larger demand, and so on. -Troy |

Am one of those you spoke of. Before '94, only had 3 pistols: Ruger MkII, S&W 36 & 29, at 20 years of shooting & reloading. AR friends around the ban, have made ARs easy to buy now. Thank you all. Be safe. |
