I want a set of good binoculars and don't mind paying a few hundred, but can't afford $k's for a set of tank-commander glasses.

Recommendations? Experiences?

Steiner. My buddy burned in his ruck from over 200' on a jump and his binos survived. Awesome glass and its super durable.

Fujinon seems well recommended.
The Steiner contract with DOD was replaced (or just supplemented) by Fujinon.
I am curious about the Cabela brand Binos as well.
Need a set for moose season.

I just read THIS ad in the snipers hide for sale forum, and I've read some reviews elsewhere over there, so I went searching for the binocs that guy was selling and found that website.

I'm kinda just joking, but I am curious.

M24 Apaches they are made by Weems and Path and a great buy. They are built like a tank and the only thing missing are the laser filter.

the best deal i found was the east german "checkpoint charlie" binoc made by zeiss/jenna for the german army.

rubber armored. EXTREAMMLY good glass, lit ranging retical <with power supply> and IR detection capable.

i got mine for 120.00 off ebay. i have seen them from 75.00 to around 200.00. the are on par with some of the best commercial glass out there for less than 1/2 the price.

Take a good look at the Leupold Wind Rivers. They are about $350 and have long eye relief for use with glasses, are very clear, and have Leupold warranty. I have a pair of Minoltas that are very nice, but more expensive.

find yourself a pair of the surplus east german 7x40 zeiss binos, you won't find anything better on the commercial market for <$1000. I paid $200 for mine and they would be a bargain at twice the price.

Without knowing what you're planning on using them for, I'll just suggest the brand (STEINER) and here's a link to their website. I've personally owned the Military 8x30 (sold it) and Marine 7x50 (best pair I've ever used). I use them for work (leo) and leave them sitting on my dashboard 90% of the time. Since their casing is rubberized, they stay put and don't slide around. Added bonus is that you set the lenses for your eyes, and you don't have to adjust focus at all again. Everything from 20 yds out to infinity is in crystal clear focus.

Go to Snipershide. "USSR" there sells the Russkie binos for CHEAP! I got three sets (one for me, my dad, and bro-in-law...an ARFCOM'er). They are definitely a GREAT deal. I also think there might be a review on SH and SC on 'em. Check 'em out though.

Everyone says Steiner Predator binocs are the best ones in the "inexpensive" range. I figure they cost $250, less if you find a great sale. I don't have Steiner's yet but I do have the Zeiss-Jenna East German military binocs (used). I got them from someone like Century Arms for around $100.

I bought a pair of compact Leica's

Damn good glass, plus they fit in a sunglass case so they are easy to pack.
Shop around - I paid about $379 for mine.

When I was in Iraq, we had the M24 mini binos made by Fujinon. They work alright but Steiner whips them hands down. The image quality of the Steiner's can't be matched in my opinion.

I have some Russian "tanker" binoculars (they even have the distancing marks in them) that I got for about $100. They are on that page for $127:

They are big and pretty heavy, but CLEAR AS CAN BE. The glass rocks. I've used them as my hunting binoculars for a few years now. It is worth carrying the extra weight for their clarity.

I have a pair of Leupold Wind River binocs (8x40 I think) and although they are a good optic, I think they are a bit overpriced.

I also have the Steiner Military & Marine 8x30 and while they have exceptional glass, they seem to have excessive flare when used at twilight or after dark. For hunting this would likely not be a problem.

One pair of binocs that I think are a good bargain and very much underrated are the Sightron line. I have some 8x42 SII's that are exceptional for the price.

Take a look at Brunton. I have a pair from the Echo line the 10x42, and they are great for the money, $259 MSRP, I paid $180 from a local hunting supply store.

I have the Leupold wind river Cascades 8x42, under $300.00 bucks, exit pupil of 5 so they're pretty dang bright. I beat the crap out of them during spring & fall hunting season, so it's a good compromise.

Good glass aint cheap & cheap glass aint good
