I sent in my order for my M1 Garand from the CMP in late June. They received and started processing my order on July 2nd. Wasn't expecting it for a few more weeks, but the FedEx guy just came to the door and dropped this off! That's some fast service! Woo hoo, happy dance!

Now I have to wait for my clipped .30-06 ammo order from them. Going to the range Sunday, hope it's here by then!

It's a service grade US Springfield, and looking at the serial (3,017,xxx), it was made in July 1944. The stock is in very good shape - dark wood with only a couple small dings! I'm so happy!

I still need to strip it and do the throat test. Where was that site that had the pic of the .30-06 round being inserted into the business end of the barrel? Shows how deep the bullet goes to determine what shape the barrel is in. Can't find it now...

Oh, and it has a P in a square stamped into the bottom of the grip area of the stock. What's that?

I'll try to get some more detailed photos up soon.

Is the rifle ALL Springfield?

Are there importation marks on it anywhere?

I'm looking for a WWII era Garand and was curious about the CMP rifles.

Dunno, how do I tell? I've wanted a Garand for a while for the historical aspect of them. Don't know where to start as far as the collecting aspect...

The barrel date/mfgr should be stamped on the barrell, probably under the handguard somewhere.

Mines a 1943 receiver and 1946 barrel. All Springfield.

Neat old gun.

Only time you would get an imported CMP gun (Danish) is you ask for one. They are a little cheaper.

If you pull the action back and lock it, the place where it covers the barrel closed will have something like SA (springfield) 43 (1943).

The trigger assembly will have the same markings on it (manufacture and date).

If the gun has import marks on it (hard to pin down exactly, depends on the company) that lessens the value but if your going to shoot it and keep her...no worries!

DVD -

Basically, you jusy don't want the tip of the bullet to go into the muzzle end of the barrel up to the neck of teh case.

If it DOES NOT, this means that the projectile makes contact with the lands of the rifling right up to the time the bullet leaves the barrel.

THAT is a good thing.

Ahhhh, fond memories of Paul's last shoot in Washington are stirred in me by this rifle. The way his hips bounced back about 18 inches as he bump-fired a full clip into the berm.

Read my post in your Carbine thread, and get Duff's Garand owner's guide at the same time you get one for the Carbine. You will find lots of good stuff in both books that's not in the GI manuals. Trust me on this, I bought one of each myself. And that Garand looks sweet, too!

Yeah the stock on it is in great shape. Only a few dings in it and those look like they were made by other Garands while it was packed in the crate. All the dings have little ridges that perfectly match the same ridges on the sight dials.

Thanks for the info on the books. I'll check them out!

The dings can probably be steamed out, if they're not too deep.

Most aren't too bad, though the one in the front handguard is pretty deep. You can see it in the second photo.

Call ODCMP and talk to them about it. Ask them to send you a better walnut (or whatever it is) front handguard. They did it for me, and didn't even ask me to return the old one. BTW, I wonder if the stock isn't birch, not walnut. That's not bad, birch is about 10% stronger than walnut.

Garand took a trip to the range today. First shot went right in the 10 ring (50 yds) and I grinned ear to ear. Rest shot a bit low so I still have some sight adjustments to do, but it shoots very nice groups! What a sweet rifle!

I'm wearing my AR15.com shirt. Should have taken a picture of that. Very nice shirts!
