.17hmr question - AR15.COM

Anyone have comments on the Marlin 917 in .17hmr? I just received one as a gift. It has the T900 trigger. What does that mean? Also will a std cleaning rod and or .22 caliber bore snake work, or do they make .17 rods and snakes?

I have a 917 VS and love it. It was stainless steel with a laminated stock.

Don't you a .22 caliber cleaning rod. The make special cleaning rods and bore snakes for .17 caliber.

the ammo is expensive.
can you sell it and buy a Ruger 10-22?
if you have a 10-22 this can be "another" gun.

If you have some spare weed wacking wire (plastic!), you can make a pull through patch string.

The .22 rod will not work at all
boresnake might but if you broke it trying to drag it thru it could get uggly.
Treat your gun to a new rod and boresnake and get some pre cut patches while you are at it.The bore on the .17 is so tiny there is very little difference between too big and too small on the patches.

Ammo right now at Midsouth Shooters Supply is $7.18 per 50.

For a gun that is a lightning bolt, compared to the .22 lr, the cost is minor. Go to Varmint Al's website and check out his writeup: www.varmintal.com/17hmr.htm

Study his drop charts, you will see why the .17HMR is a much better caliber and very destructive on small varmints!!

Wow. Cool chart. Pretty much confirms what I knew but cool to see it drawn out. Drops liek a rock after 100 yards. Hehe, and I was trying to make 200 yard shots with the damn thing on prairie dogs.

Oh I have no doubt it can be done. But I was in Nebraska, in the wind, distance makes that pretty difficult. Besides tehre was plenty of close in targets, then I'd just move closer.

Dewey makes cleanings rods for this caliber. Sinclair Internantional web site will have bore guide and 17 cal. patches, basically everything you need. The little guns are awesomely accurate. I have a Rifle basix trigger in mine ($70) dropped the pull weight to 1lb even very crisp. With Hornady ammo it prints 1/2" groups if I do my part. For $300 it's more than worth it.

My only near opportunity to shoot this thing is tommorrow. I hope I can find a cleaning rod to clean it with tonite. I want to break it in properly.

Update. Shoots nice, but mag is a piece of S. Wobbles, and won't feed hollowpoints reliably. Tightened the tracks now better, still if mag drops down slightly, bullets catch on bottom of chamber. I haven't tried the polymer tips. Perhaps they take up the slop and feed anyway.

Any one hear of fixes?

According to Marlin.....

The fix is to just open the bolt, then push the mag "forward" until the mounting bracket moves the mag slightly upward.

PROBLEM SOLVED.
