Watching "For Whom the Bells toll" the other night, and having read the novel many years ago. I know that American volunteers(Mercenaries) are romanticized even though they were fighting for the Socialist cause. I have never heard of Americans fighting for the Nationalist side. Does anyone know?
And how did that war start anyway? Can you recommend any good history books on the topic?

The Lincoln Brigade commander was the first black man to lead an integrated American unit in combat.  (Bit of trivia I had stuck in my noggin)

Look at Picasso's "Guernica". Confusing and disorganized, no? TJ hit it on the head.

I don’t remember much of the Spanish Civil War history I learned 25+ years ago but I do remember Americans fought on both sides, more for the Socialist but they did fight on both sides. The Socialist/Communist/Stalinist get romanticized therefore you only hear about the American with that side.
