Just wondering if the 10 bucks it cost to upgrade from SWC to JHP is worth it, or is there really no difference?

SWC is great for punching paper.

JHP is for killin'.

depends on the pistol.  if you're talking .38 snubby you want 158 gr lead SWC-HP, a 2" barrel won't move a JHP fast enough for it to expand.
