Only thick pieces of hard metal present a real recoil hazard. Aluminum is great, so is any sheet metal.

I saw a bullet deflect all the way back to the shooting rest at an indoor handgun range. Just a fluke ricochete off the metal backstop. It wasnt going to fast but I wouldnt have wanted to get hit with it. It was a .45 I think.

Personally I like to shoot metal, so I know my insanely powerful deadly 50 caliber fully automatic sniper rifle will be able to shoot down the 747's that fly overhead here, on their way to JFK airport. You know..... In case I have to. Or a nuclear reactor... It'll blow a hole CLEAR THROUGH those, from MILES AWAY........ Have to know the limitations of your arsenal, after all. *sniff sniff*  Smells like troll in here....... Yuk |

I shoot 2" steel at 100 yds with rifles and 3/8" steel with pistols at 25 yds. No problems.

i only shoot at metal thats over a 100 yards away and flat. Also i mostly shoot at metal gong style targets since i like to hear the report. you dont get that with anything else.

I took a AP round to the shoulder after it came back at me shooting this piece of 1" thick steel
The AP just scratched the surface

WTF!? Recoil hazard is THE reason to use metal! Yeah, nothing like training under the real pressure and danger of live simulated "return fire" that jackets and lead ricochetting off metal plates at 50yrds can give! You'll LEARN to keep yer head and yer ass DOWN FER SURE mister! Now drop and gimme 50!   |

Under the proper conditions, metal is a great target. It's when you stumble across the wrong conditions that peeople can get bad hurt.
I shoot metal all the time in cowboy shoots. The LEAD bullets splatter and we get a reactive CLANG with the BANG, well most of the time . But if the target has been cratered by too hot loads or jacketed bullets you can get bad bounceback .With copper jacketed up close you can get a clang as it splatters, a pwing as it goes through, and a CLANG OUCH as it bounces back. As with a loth of things about shooting you need to know what is safe and what isn't. And learning what isn't can be hazardous to your health. |

Somewhat of a hijack, but has anyone shot at other metal targets other than steel(iron) and aluminum?
How about titanium, tungsten, copper, lead, brass, bronze, tin, zinc, nickel or magnesium? Just curious. CW |

I like shooting at abandoned cars. From this experience, I tell anyone who says that a gun is so powerful that it can shoot through a car door to STFU. Damn near anything will shoot through a car door. I do have a windshield I'm planning on doing some ballistic testing on.

I usually shoot at a 8in gong at 200m and a 12in at 300m. I don't like setting up targets and the gong lets you know when you connected...

We used to have shitloads of fun hanging stop signs, etc from a tree, and shooting them from about 150-200 yards away with the .22's. It was always neat when you could get 10 rounds in the air and hear all 10 impact on the aluminum target.
