What would you do for a career, if you had to start over tomorrow, with nothing?


Self-employed?

Insurance?
Real Estate?




Here's why I ask:

I love my job - well, most of it. But I hate my 1-hour commute. I'd love to live in the little town where I grew up, and work in one of the medium-sized nearby towns.

But to do so means either jockeying for a management position through the good-old-boy-network, or selling insurance, or real estate, or something like that, as there are no jobs in my field in the small towns nearby.

Find a job that I would enjoy more.. not so much concerned about the $.

As long as I have a roof over my head, and food in my stomach, nothing else really matters.

Money is good.. but its not what life is about.

I have started over. After 16 years with the same company. Floundered around for months. Took a job I hated and only lasted 3 months. Out of work again for about 5 months.

Started my own company and now things are really looking up for me.

If I had to start over, I would have moved to a larger city 2 years ago, immersed myself in the best it had to offer, and I'd be on my way to teaching Communications. while freelancing on the side. I'm glad I reneged on my opp to have a career in military intelligence because the lifestyle isn't for me. I'm going through the career decision thing now.

I dunno, I'm just hoping to actually find a full time job with benifits once I move.

Whoa...full stop...you're complaining about an hour commute?

I used to work about 10-12 miles from work as the crow flies...it took an hour on the train to get there. It took 45 minutes driving, if there was 0 traffic on the roads. (This was in/near NYC)

An hour? Dude, an hour is nothing.

I'm relocating out to MN...I purposefully am moving to a house 30+ miles away from work. Why? Commute time will be 45 minutes, yah. I can live with that.

Peace and quiet? Priceless.

I've been living in or near NYC for over 10 years now..I think I got real sick of it around 6 years ago, when work stuck me in a corporate apartment at Wall St. and Broadway for a 1+ year contract. It was nice for the first two weeks, but then the novelty of having liquor delivered to your home with the pizza wears off. I wound up moving out and getting my own apartment out in Jersey, and have been there since...until next month sometime, when I close on a house out here in MN.

I guess it really depends on where you are now. If you're in a great place, then cool. The hour is worth your time each way, considering the aggrivation you'll be leaving behind. If you're stuck in a bustling metropolis and commute to another one...well, that's a whole different can of worms. To me, anyway.

Just my opinion...but if you're living where you want to live now, an hour isn't bad. It really isn't. I have friends who have to leave home at 5am to get at work before 8am in the city. They usually get to leave work around 6, and get home around 8 or 9, depending on mass transit shit. And yah...they do it willingly for some reason. I don't think their pay is that good.

If I had to start over, I would have done two years in the Army enlisted before I started college.  Then I would have gotten a degree in journalism and pursued a career as a photographer after my comittment to the military was over.

It costs me over $400 per month just for gasoline to drive to work and back. It's getting kinda old.......

And a career in modern journalism is easy...just say you hate religion, republicans, guns, hetrosexuals, the family unit...and you love taxes, permissive society (anything goes!), freedom of...well everything including porn, dependancy on government and others for your safety...I could go on and on.

Ahh...that is a totally different problem

I did that for a while too, when I had to commute by car. Driving over 80 miles a day in a Durango R/T (which only eats Premium) added up. Same price range as you, about $400/mo.

The solution at the time was to sell that and get something a bit more fuel efficent.

Unless you absolutly need the current model of vehicle you drive...I mean, there is almost always a more efficent version of pretty much any vehicle on the road. True, it may/will mean buying an import for some things like pickups and overgrown station wagons...but I'm sure somewhere along the line you've considered this anyway...

I bought a car, drove it to work for 3 weeks.....sold it.

I'm not a 'car' person.

And anyway, in the relatively rural south, it shouldn't be necessary to drive an hour to work.
