Strap a small female on the barrel. This will reduce the perceived recoil.

But thats not the high speed low drag, in the field way of doing things... I cannot be tactal with a woman taped to my barrel! Unless shes carring my ballistic inserts for me.. |

Recoil from the .460 is grim. Putting an effective break on the muzzle would be a great idea if you have any idea of shooting it from the bench without a Caldwell Lead Sled.
You will have better recoil control firing it offhand but be warned, you might lose your balance if you have no break and are under 300 pounds. While I have never fired a .460, I have fired a .416 Rigby and Remington plus a .338-.378, all without breaks. Die? No, but you might break a shoulder/butt/arm. |

throwing some mercury recoil absorbers in the stock couldnt hurt. I figure you should just suck that bad boy in as tight as you can and hold on for the ride

I had a buddy bought one about 20 years ago. We took it out to the farm and lit off 2 rounds each. Thats all either of us needed, still makes an interesting conversation piece in his safe today. While no pussy cat, makes his .458 Win feel tame in comparison.

I have shot a .460 Wby unbraked, pretty stout but I had no problem with it at least shooting from the standing position. Now shooting prone and off a bench are another story, my buddy who owned the .460 Wby shot it off the bench once, it knocked the wind out of him.

You won't die, but you could certainly hurt yourself if you don't have any experience with a real heavy hitter. I have found that after a certain level, 50ftlbs, I am unable to tell much difference up to the limit of 86ftlbs my .416 Rigby can produce when loaded to near .416 Weatherby velocities. I don't mean to say that I don't feel a difference in recoil levels, but the discomfort factor does not increase at the same rate... for me.
If you hand load, start off with some light for caliber bullets with minimum charges and build up your recoil tolerence levels. Spend as little time on the bench as you can. I shot a hog with my .416, and I swear it didn't kick any harder then a .30-06 when there was hair under the crosshairs.  Have fun!!

Get a Past Recoil Sheild - best $26 I ever spent - cuts the felt recoil from a .300WM down to .243 level(or less)... It makes sighting in my slug gun a pleasureable experience - used to be "not so much fun"(3" mag slug out of a 12ga pump)... I know you're talking about a significant recoil increase, but the principle remains the same... I figure maybe it'll reduce felt recoil to .338WM or .375H&HMag levels - which should be tolerable enough....

It won't kill you, it won't even really hurt you. Put a brake on it. Put a recoil pad on the rifle, Kick-Eze or Decelerator. If you are going to shoot it off the bench a 25lb bag of shot inbetween the rifle and your shoulder will take much of the recoil away.
I have a .600 OverKill, it fires a 900gr .620" bullet at over 2250fps. Your .460 puts out 8000 to 8500 ft/lbs of energy. The OK will get over 10000 ft/lbs with my rifles top load. It is also coming back at you with a higher velocity and a bit more energy. That's a CZ550 .416Rigby action. My local gunsmith did all the work. According to the creator of this round it can go as high as 2400fps, but I would rather have a Granite Mountain Arms action for that. Bigger bolt and lugs.
