Europe-wide 62mph limit mooted

The European Union’s energy commissioner has called for a 100kph — 62mph — speed limit to be adopted throughout Europe. Andris Piebalgs said roads in all 25 member states should be posted with a uniform limit to cut accidents and save fuel. His suggestion follows a recommendation by the International Energy Association in Paris and is seen as a quick way to cut energy consumption in response to depleted oil reserves.

“If in Germany cars are speeding at 200kph (124mph) they are using too much petrol,” said Piebalgs. He was speaking at a meeting in Germany, where motorists enjoy the only speed-limit-free roads in the EU.

A comment on the website of Der Spiegel, the German news magazine, said: “With those speed limits we would be castrated.”

Piebalgs’s proposal came as the European economic and social committee, a body that advises the European commission on drawing up new legislation, launched an initiative to create a common European highway code. Its aim is to remove the wide variations in road regulations of member states.

The committee said that in Portugal it is illegal to drive with daytime lights while in northern and eastern Europe lights cannot be switched off. Critics point out the contrasting weather conditions in Scandinavia and Portugal.

The committee wants a commission white paper, with legislation to follow.

A good portion of the Autobahn already has speed limits in place.  That being said, I dont see them going to a 100k limit anytime soon.

What do you expect when you gleefully hand your country's sovereignty over to a pack of socialist bureaucrats?  WTF were the Germans thinking -- that petty tyrant bureaucrats with power WOULDN'T exercise it?????

I don't see it happening. Not that the Italians or Germans would ever obey it.

Apparently Clarkson (British car reviewer) was testing a new Aston Martin at high speed on the Autostrade, and the Italian police came up behind him, then next to him. He thought he was about to be pulled over, but then the polizia indicated for him to go faster. They just wanted to see how fast the car could go!

I have found speed limits in the UK to be something more like a recommended guideline. If you're not weaving or otherwise driving dangerously, the constabulary seem inclined to leave you alone. Drive under the limit, but careering through traffic, and they'll haul you in. Much more sensible.

The EU commission is doing more to destroy the EU than any anti-EU movement ever could.

I predict that the EU constitution will NOT be ratified in several countries this year - which will hopefully seriously slow down the EU, even possibly cripple it .  I think there is a good chance that several small countries will reject it, but also possibly larger countries (maybe even France?).

My thoughts exactly and you got it in an early reply too.

Loose your freedoms, just pass on local control and give somebody else the joystick and your life is crap.

You'll have to move to Montana, where there are some stretches of highway that have no speed limit,
in the daytime anyway.      Do 150 MPH and you MAY see someone fly by you like you're parked!

last I heard they did away with the "safe and prudent" speed limits on those highways.

I agree, the commission is acting like they are having fears about France rejecting it, and now they're going to really tick the Germans off.   Can't think of a better thing to happen.

When we drove through Montana 2 years ago there were posted speed limits. I think it was 70, but don't remember for sure. The time before that when "reasonable and prudent" was still in effect I was driving a beretta GT, only got passed by 2 cars.  A BMW and a Mercedes.

The Germans will never go for speed limits on their autobahn!

Was thinking that if two of the major players in the game are against it, the other smaller countries might not feel as presured into agreeing the mess.

Maybe the Germans are after some of that land along the French boarder though

I read several articles lately about how the French might just vote "NO" to the EU early this summer. Apparently the French gov is busy pulling out all the stops with advertising trying to get it passed.

Articles also indicated that several other countries aren't "on board' either. Seems there is a growing undercurrent to just say "NO" that in countries that put it up for referendum.

Articles suggested that if Frenchies say "Non" is might just start the whole thing unraveling.

Not that I would consider it a bad thing.

The biggest thing worrying some is that if it gets shot down in a couple of places the Euro might crash really hard. Guess some hedge funds and bankers might be worried about getting burned. Could get ugly if it happens, oui?

not only this, but the EUs policies regarding disarmenant and various other issues are making most of the countries want to back out; as the EU commision is too "over-handed" in its approach(hey, as bad as France is, atleast they have liberal gun laws , compared to everyone except the US,Switzerland, and Finland that is).

France's gun laws aren't bad compared to the rest of the EU.
