The YF-23 was a pretty plane too... I kind of wish the USA could have got both. I'm happy with getting at least the F/A-22, Lockheed did an outstanding job.

IIRC, there has been some talk of resurrecting the F-23 program & building them as strike fighters. I hope this comes to fruition, because it's a great design & it deserves to fly in protection of our freedom.

Does anyone have the photo posted a few months ago of an F-22 taking off from Boeing Field?  The plane was caught from behind and to its right, and had a beautiful double tail of fire showing the patterns of shockwaves in the exhaust.

It was off Airliners.net, but is no longer on that site as far as I can find.  I screwed up and only saved it on my work computer, and am no longer at that job.

I think the F-22 will be a wonderful thing - especially in th near future when we have to deal with Korea and CHINA.  

That having been said, I was more a fan of the YF-23 than the F-22.  I guess they were pretty close, but my understanding is that the YF-23 was more powerful and faster.  And it looked cooler.  

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come along shortly and correct me.  

Anyone have pics of the YF-23??????

Whats this business about the Raptor being able to take on four F-15's at one time in a dog fight and taking them all out?

All of the pilots who flew the F-15  said they never even saw the F-22.

That seems to be the rumor. And at Langley AFB it has supposedly been able to take more than four. Never seen anything solid to prove it though. I've never heard any of our pilots say they've gotten the upper hand on the Raptor.

I have to agree with DrFrige though. It's an ugly jet and I hate working on it. I'd rather work the F-15 any day. Whick would I rather have if I were a pilot is a different story. But to be a maintainer on this jet is no fun!

That was an actual military exercise...actually happen.  So yes, MM is telling the truth

Damn...if its worse maintenance wise than the F-15, then it must really friggin suck. I hated every minute of working on the F-15's, it wasn't much better than the F-4's...only good thing about working on the F-4's was the location I was at...Philippines

All crew chiefs have is false pride, your job sucks ass.  Specs rule!   I understand that crew chiefs are always pissed cause you can train a spec to be a booger hooker in about a week but you can never learn our job.  Sucks to be so replaceable huh?

I'm structural maintenance/corrosion control. My AFSC is 2A7X3.

On the 15 I worked the airframe. There wasn't really a problem dealing with corrosion. Except when the pilots piss on the floor. On the Raptor I maintain the coationgs.

I'll take my 30 year F-15's all day long over that hunk of junk.

No wonder you're complaining, the coatings will always be a PITA on the B-2/F-117/F-22 and F-35.  That's the price you pay for stealth, talk to guys who work the -117 if you think you have a lot of work on 22s.    Go work the BUFFs that have spent a lot of time at Diego Garcia if you want to see some insane corrosion.

I don't even use mine, but then again I didn't have to have to go to school to get it either.  Its nice when you can show up at the FSDO with records in hand and get signed off, unlike a pointy head  You guys are specialists alright....just like the special olympics

Edit to add:  commercial aviation is a dying industry....but there will always be those special people who enjoy working for $12 an hour.....

I disagree about commercial aviation dying, but much heavy maintenance is moving out of the country, can't argue with cheap labor.  After the first few crashes caused by it the airlines will bring the work back here.

Yes, for you working on the -22 does suck bad.  I worked -22's from Aug 2000  to Jan 2005 at Edwards.

So what's a 2a3X3a do? Remove the screws for the aft engine inspection panel and then call in the 2a3X3b to remove the panel?

Working on the F-15 sucks? Who'da thunk. I figured that since Air Force birds are so frigggen clean and since it's a recent aircraft design it would be easy to work on.
Not like removing a generator or a hydraulic pump from an F-4.

2A3X3A works on F-15's
2A3X3B works on F-16's and F-117's
2A3X3J works A-10', U-2's, and RQ-1's

When you make E-6 the sreadout at the end of your AFSC goes away and you get to work them all.

Actually changing a Hyd pump on a F-15 is very easy, but Lockeed had go and make it a pain in the ass on the F-16 and -22.

I worked F-4s (G models) for a few years, everything was a huge PITA to remove/replace, the F-15 is leaps and bounds better about component placement and QD panel fasteners and the like.  I haven't worked -22s but they are even newer than C-17s so I imagine they are a piece of cake to get to everything as well.  McDonell Douglas can build a hell of an airframe, but they do have their head up their arse about some things.  Most lockheed planes (C-5, C-141, C-130 etc) are piles of crap structurally but easier to work on, I guess maybe the -22 is that way too.  CSDs on an F-4 were a very special item to change weren't they?

For the Navy anyone who works aircraft structures or hydraulics is called an AM - Aircraft Structural Mechanic.
If they go to a specific aircraft school or a specific job school then they get an NEC - Navy Enlisted Classification code, but 99.9% of the time it does not matter.

As an AMS3 (old school) I worked out of the airframe shop.
I was also an Aircrewman.
I was also qualified to work on two airframes, the A-3 and the A-7.
I was also an in shop / in process Quality Control Inspector and I was dual turn qualed on bot the A-3 and the A-7 (TF30 only).
Oh yea, and I was also a qualified plane captain (AF crew chief) for both the A-3 and A-7.
