Damn, it's like ANY "critically acclaimed comedy" to come out now is about as funny as watching grampa snore on the couch for two hours.

Rented "Sideways" tonight and I just walked out after the first hour. BORING, depressing and fucking ENDLESS blabbering about wine. THAT'S supposed to be a "comedy"!???

And before that was "Napoleon Dynamite" - sucked.

Before that was "About Schmidt" - sucked.

"Terminal" - not a single funny scene in it.

"Garden State" - zzzzzzzzzzz,

"Lost In Translation" - Kill me.

"The Royal Tannenbaums" - Kill me now.

WTF!? WHY the fuck are these things even labelled "Comedies"!???

WHAT THE FUCK IS SO FUCKING FUNNY IN ANY OF THESE!???

Holy crap they are so fucking tedious and boring!

There is ONE thing though that all these "comedies" have in common - you gotta be on 5,000 fucking milligrams of PROZAC to even BEGIN to sit through them without wanting blow your fucking head off!

Shit! Where in the fuck the fucking good COMEDIES anymore! You know - the ones that are actually FUNNY.

Anchorman?

Old School?

Starsky & Hutch?

And FWIW,  Garden State, About Schmidt, Lost in Translation aren't comedies.

Sideways, The Terminal and The Royal Tenenbaums are tweeners.

You basically list 1 comedy.  That being Napoleon Dynamite.

Saw it.

There were some funny parts. Not a great comedy, but not "critically acclaimed" either.

Starsky & Hutch? I've pretty much given up on anything with Ben Stiller.

Zoolander, Dodgeball, Meet the Fockers.... sucked, sucked, sucked.

The other one I liked was Bubba Hotep.  I still have to go buy that one.  I finally saw it a few weeks ago and had a great time.

I've always been a Bruce Cambell fan though.

Comedy is dead because Mel Brooks stopped directing.

Most modern comedy is shit.

Dave Chappelle is about the only funny comedian out there today.

Anchorman.....sucked ass, the part with Jack Black was funny though...  "That's how I roll..." LOL ; Dodgeball was the same way, dumb movie but it had moments, "if you can dodge a wrench..."

Napoleon Dynamite, got a see it more than once, it helps if you grew up in the rural west in the 80s or 90s...  I have Specialists and PFCs quoting that fucking movie to me 12 times a fucking day.

Sideways was an okay chick flick, but I don't think it was really meant to be a comedy.

Team America World Police was funny, but the puppet sex went a little too far..  SHITTING?????  Aaack.

Yeah, that was a good one.

I KNOW there's good comedies out there and there are bad comedies out too. But at least with a bad comedy you can SEE that it was SUPPOSED to be funny.

But with these depressing-as-hell dogs I listed - there is NOTHING even resembling a comedy in ANY of them.

And yet they all get rated 3 & 4 stars and are actually called "hilarious" by some gotta-be-drugged-up movie reviewers.

You can tell a lot about a person's intelligence by the variety of humor they "get". Sadly, an awful lot of people these days seem to only "get" the most rudimentary forms of comedy.

First of all, who are "they".

Second of all, if you are so unsatisfied, step up to the plate and entertain us all with your comedic genius.

Third of all...you want comedy?  I give you comedy.  Do a search on my posts, and you will see some of the most outrageous funny shit in the history of modern man.  You should send me money.  A LOT of money.

Stay tuned.  Eventually, I will entertain you.

Well then just HOW THE FUCK are you supposed to know if it's really a "comedy" or really "drama" or whatever if you have to 1) ignore what the rental place says, 2) ignore the writing on the box, 3) ignore the reviews, 4) ignore the dodos who say that crap like "Sideways" is "funny as hell" on AR15.com?????

My wife and her sister watched "About Schmidt".  So I sat there for awhile with them.

It was a new level of sucking crap.  I sat there waiting for some grand wisdom or something to be shown to me by the producers.  I had to leave.  It was the most depressing crap I'd ever seen.  The point was obvious but mired with the sheer boredom of having to sit there and watch some person just exist.

Sally Struthers in Ethiopia would be more entertaining.

Those other ones you listed, I haven't even bothered with.  They all looked liked they sucked from the previews.   Lucky me .

Because if I WANT to see a comedy... I'd like to KNOW what kind of movie I'm renting so I don't get an action or mystery or drama or sci-fi or gorefest or sucky POS movie like "Sideways" instead.

Yep.

Even with the sucky comedies like "Zoolander" or "Meet the Fockers" you can see it's supposed to be funny, but just fails to deliver.

But so many "critically acclaimed comedies" today (like every one I mentioned in the OP) have absolutely NO "comedy" in them. VERY rare glimpses of dry irony or nuanced expressions amidst a desert of tedious dialogue and snailpaced plot do not make a film funny.

Naploeon Dynamite is the pinnacle of the MOUNTAIN of not thinking while watching a movie. That was the reason people thought it was funny, the fact that if they thought, they would realize that it sucked.

Team America owns. Watch some old classics until you find a consensus on new ones. "Dr. Strangelove OR How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb" will win your heart and mind.

I dread to admit this, but I've been more amused by my wife's romantic comedies than anything that has come out recently in the comedy genre. I never did like Adam Sandler.
