Pregnant girl defies ban

AP

MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- A pregnant student who was banned from graduation at her Roman Catholic high school announced her own name and walked across the stage anyway at the close of the program.

Alysha Cosby's decision prompted cheers and applause Tuesday from many of her fellow seniors at St. Jude Educational Institute.

But her mother and aunt were escorted out of the hall by police after Cosby headed back to her seat.

"I can't believe something like this is happening in 2005," said her mom, Sheila Cosby. "My daughter has been through a lot and I am proud of her. She deserved to walk, and she did."

The school's guidance counsellor delivered Cosby's diploma to her house earlier Tuesday, but she still wanted to participate.

Cosby was told in March that she could no longer attend school because of safety concerns, and her name was not listed in the graduation program.

The father of Cosby's child, also a senior at the school, was allowed to participate in graduation.

It is a matter of religion, and therefore can only be addressed within the church.

Write to the new pope about it, maybe he will think it's not cool.

Solution.  Keep your legs closed until after graduation if you attend a Catholic School.  What did she expect.  So much more about this pisses me off.

The story is disturbing to me (and I'm Catholic).  Granted the young lady made a bad decision and got pregnant out of wedlock, at least she didn't make a worse decision and kill the baby.  It's also disturbing that the baby's father was allowed to participate.  Here's another story that has more details:  LINKY

Pregnant student told to stay home

By Erica Pippins
Montgomery Advertiser

Alysha Cosby has looked forward to hearing her name called at high school graduation ever since she was a freshman.

Now Cosby, a senior at St. Jude Educational Institute, is worried that her own recent announcement to school officials might keep that from happening.

Cosby, 17, is 20 weeks pregnant and said she was told by administrators that she could no longer attend classes and would have to complete her studies from home.

"My education is the most important thing to me. The way I receive my education shouldn't change just because I am pregnant," said Cosby, who was informed of the administrators' decision on March 24 and has been homeschooled since that time.

"I've been on the honor roll pretty much through high school, and I have worked really hard to get to this point," she said. "I just don't want to be denied the chance to walk with my class because I am pregnant."

According to the 2004-2005 St. Jude student handbook, if a student becomes pregnant, she must notify the guidance department and administration as soon as she finds out. Cosby did so at nine weeks.

Though St. Jude is a Catholic school, Principal Johnny Mitchell said Cosby is not being "condemned" because she is pregnant. The school has not decided whether Cosby can take part in the May 17 commencement exercises, but Mitchell said he feels she should work from home due to "safety reasons."

"I don't want to penalize or make any student feel ostracized because they are having a baby. But I am concerned about her safety," Mitchell said. "We at St. Jude have no reason to mistreat any young lady or gentleman. Miss Cosby will still receive her degree."

School policy states that "medical safety, physiological well-being and social issues will be taken into consideration when deciding how long a student will attend classes or extracurricular activities; if/when she needs to begin homeschooling; and when she may return to school after the delivery of her child."

St. Jude does not have any elevators, which means students have to travel up and down stairs to get to class. Mitchell said Cosby tore her anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, in her knee last year and had also experienced morning sickness a few times during class.

Cosby, who is considering filing a discrimination lawsuit, says she "got around just fine on crutches" after she was injured and wouldn't do anything to harm herself or her baby.

The child's father also is a student at St. Jude and has not been removed from class nor told he can't participate in graduation or senior activities.

"I've been here for nearly four years, and I don't remember any other pregnant girls being homeschooled," Cosby said. In a doctor's note dated March 31, 2005, Cosby's obstetrician writes that she is "fine to be at school until 9-01-05."

"I feel that if my doctor thinks it is OK, I should be allowed to go to school. Working from home is not the same, because you don't have the kind of help and interaction you get from being in the classroom," Cosby said.

But Mitchell, who is completing his first year as St. Jude's principal, said similar safety-related recommendations have been made at schools that fall under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mobile's umbrella.

He said Gwen Byrd, superintendent of schools for the archdiocese, supported his decision. Byrd could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Cosby said she would prefer to be back in school, but ultimately, she just wants to walk with her class. Her father is stationed in Rome, Italy, and is planning to come stateside to see her graduate.

"I would never do anything to make St. Jude look bad, and I am not speaking out now to paint it in a negative light. I love my school," Cosby said. "I've been looking forward to this moment ever since I was in ninth grade. It's not fair that it could be taken away from me just because I am having a baby."

Getting pregnant when you're unmarried and 17 is not the wisest decision one can make.

Refusing to let one parent into graduation and not the other is a double standard, so I say good for her for violating the ban.  It was unfair and wrongheaded, and she brought it to attention.

Ok, so she tore her knee up, and was on crutches TOO.......

THAT explains a lot more about them not letting her attend school.  Figure they were covering their asses, in case she slipped on the crutches and fell, injuring her/the baby.

Can smell a HUGE lawsuit if that happened.  Not suprised they didn't want her around.

The graduation bit is still a little retarded though.  Sounds like they were just being shitheads on that part.

Who knows....... Always three sides to every story.

I suspect there is a lot here we do not know.

From the 2 stories posted here this practice does not appear to be school policy as other pregnant girls have been allowed to finish classes and attend graduation ceremonies so there appears to be no double standard in play. So why treat this girl different for no reason... or do we have all the facts.

You don’t think it is a possibility the press would omit facts or mislead anyone do you. Don’t you think it is a strong possibility that something other than the pregnancy and injury or combination of factors caused the schools actions?

We all know the press would not slant a story…. Koran desecration mean anything?

The problem is this:

NOBODY can be (or do..) right 100% of the time.

If you hold to a set of morals or ideals higher than yourself, you will always fall short of them. That is NOT an excuse to quit holding to those ideals.

The only way to completely avoid hypocrisy is to say 'anything goes' and leave it at that.

YMMV.

Wow. That almost sounds like stuff worthy of a separate thread.

I guess if I had issues with that sort of thing, I, as the parent of the kid in question, might have chosen to send the kid to another school.

Unless, of course, I saw the good in sending my kids to a catholic school, in which case I might voluntarily send them there.

Unfortunately, by doing this - voluntarily - you kinda have to (by default) agree to live by their (hypocritcal, maybe) rules - which, in this case, the girl wasn't willing to do.

I would have let her walk.

But it's not my school.

Maybe the girl should try to seek to get the protocol for handling pregnant students changed.

Ask the Romans, as they demanded the annual taxes to be paid in Bethlehem.

I agree that the father of the child should have been banned from graduation as well.  If you're going to go to a Catholic school, you should abide by the rules.

The safety issue is most likely a liability issue.
