i have lived here a year now and really like it
lots of college options--live outside the city limits; its cheaper and more gun friendly out in the 'burbs--i dont live in town, so im not up on public transport or nightlife, though there is tons to do in the area IM for more specific questions

I've only been there once (for a 5-day conference), but I liked it a lot. Definitely the kind of place I could live. Not so small, and not too big. Beautiful country right over in Kentucky too. |

Your account on this board is back up? but yea I'm heading to OH (hence the thread about Columbus on PB) I was days away from heading down south to ATL, but my best friend just came back from philly and wants to hit up the midwest. He refuses to go to the south since its to hot and I figure financial failure is less likely with another person since it nearly cuts the cost of rent in half. |

I've lived in Columbus and work in Cinci, I hate traffic so live between the two. Traffic here is non existant compared to the rest of the US, but I'm anal about it. My brother lives in Cols. and says the job market sucks, I've "heard" good things about Cinci but havn't looked for a job here in 15 years. On transportation, I'd buy a car and live in the suburbs. It's in Ohio, not far from Mentor. What's that area called down by the water that used to be run-down but got renovated? Nice restaurants, people arriving by yacht, etc.
 EDIT---Am I thinking of the right place? Rock-N-Roll Museum, etc? It's been years since I went.

You are thinking of Cleveland my friend. The area "down by the water" is called The Flats. I went to Cleveland a couple years ago, it doesn't have too much other than the Rock Hall, and the rest of the city looks like a craphole. I don't know too much about Cincinatti. I do know it is on the southern border of the state, across the river from Covington, KY. ETA-Mentor is down the Shocknessey from Cleveland. You don't want to drive the Indiana Toll Road or the J.W. Shocknessey Ohio Turnpike. |

My inlaws are from Cincinnati and they take me there quite a bit to see Reds games. I like the area, it is pretty, the city is clean, traffic seems OK, my brother in law lives there and he likes it a lot. I like it better than Indianapolis for the aesthetic qualities. I have thought about moving there but I am unsure of the gun laws and my father in law is really troubled by all of the black vs black violence.

I lived there for a year and a half in the mid-90's. I loved it! We moved there from Houston, so the crime rate was virtually nil compared to what we were used to. The seasons were great and I got almost enough snow to satisfy my desire (remember, I'm from Texas).
It's a great starting point to see many many things. Indianapolis, Columbus, Lexington and Louisville are all 2 hours away. Dayton is an hour away. Some of my favorite things were: * Clifton Gorge (have breakfast at the mill in Clifton) * Wright Patterson AFB Museum * Indianapolis zoo (they have the world's largest children's museum too) * All of downtown Cincinnati * Museum Center in Cincinnati * Roebling suspension bridge * Germantown in Columbus * Mount Adams area of Cincinnati * The Boathouse and Montgomery Inn!!! * Lincoln's birthplace & boyhood home * Many other things I don't recall We went back on vacation last year. Driving through the countryside anywhere in the area is terrific. There are B&B's all around and no shortage of things to keep just about anyone interested. |

Cincinnati is a pretty decent town overall. The economy holds pretty steady here - even in deep recession. There's like 14 major insurance companies and 11 banks headquartered here - P&G, GE Aircraft, etc... a bunch of players. Everything in Cincinnati is controlled by the CBC (Cincinnati Business Committee). Cinci is one of the wealthiest cities per capita in the US.
Cincinnati is an OLD town. It's also got all sorts of different types of architecture, which has made it a popular movie set destination. Lots of movies have been filmed here... Rain Man, Little Man Tate, Milk Money,Traffic, Gleaming the Cube (okay... that really wasn't a movie...) ... are just a few that come to mind. The town is divided in half running north & south cut by Vine street (St. Rt. 4.). There's been a east side west side thing going since the late 1800s where the wealthy white collar generally lived east of vine street and the blue collar lived west of vine. SKYLINE CHILI!!! Downtown sucks except for Main Street. Lots of bars & clubs. Northern KY is really hopping these days. Mainstrasse Village, Newport on the Levee... THere's been a smoking ban discussed in town. The town is actually growing up north in the suburbs because of the proximity between Dayton & Cinci. The Mason area is growing very fast. I have a friend who built a new home last year in this area and between the time that they broke ground and completion 4 months later - his home had gained $40,000 in value. The riots few years ago were pretty much relegated to downtown and the The WEBN fireworks are among the best in the world. Rozzi's moved their factory here because of the event. Norwood is a city within the city that has very friendly gun laws. Cinci proper has terrible gun laws. You can be in desolate rural land within a 30-45 minute drive out of the beltway. Overall, it's a great town. I don't think it's a good singles town, although I've not been single in a very long time. Gimme a shout when you get to town! |

Cincinnati native checking in. I go to Ohio State but freqently commute back home. Can't really comment on public transportation as I've only used it a couple times, but I'd assume its about as solid as COTA is up here. UC and XU are in close proximity to each other and I'm down at UC alot. UC has a nice small campus(in comparison to OSU's size anything is small) unfortunatly it's perched in the middle of Clifton where things can get a bit more hairy. Nightlife is pretty decent, plenty of places to go to all over town. Newport on the Levy(KY) is just across the river and is a great spot to catch dinner and a movie. The Riverfront is filled with restaurants and finding somewhere to eat shouldn't be a problem. I highly recommend Mongomery Inn Boathouse(it's a restaurant). As for gun ranges, there is an 25m indoor range called Target World on 275 north of town between I-71 and I-75 and Miller's is on I-75 outside of the 275 loop if I recall correctly.

I think if you draw a triangle from Columbus to Indianapolis to Cinncy you will find plent of opportunity. I live outside of Dayton and within about an hour or hour and 1/2 I can get to Pacer's games, Buckeyes games and Reds Games.
I stay out of the cities and just go there for games, bars, etc. I-75 from Cincinnati to Dayton is pretty much surrounded by suburbs that are great. Dan |

Riots. Don't forget the riots. Everytime a Cinncy Cop kills a black man, there's riots. Otherwise it's a nice area. Lot's to do in and around Cinncy as others have already stated. Awesome airshow every summer BTW.

Cincinnati loves their Reds! Baseball is a mainstay for the Queen City of the Ohio. Of all the Reds, Pete Rose was probably the most beloved. Even though he was a gambler in denial. Did the fans care? Heck no! Charlie "do the" Hustle was the Man! The Queen City is also in Ohio, home of Columbus, whose favorite son is crippled porn czar Larry Flynt, and Cleveland, whose River often catches on fire.

I lived in the Turret building immediately behind the Music Hall Parking Garage on Central Avenue. The riots 'broke out' in front of my window. Literally. The crowd spilled around the corner from District 1 and the cops fired tear gas to disperse the crowd after the news van rolled away. I personally confronted Charlie Luken the morning after he appeared on Nightline. I was in the Council's offices and addressed them at the council meeting immediately following the week of military curfew. I had a huey hovering over my loft 24/7 for a week solid. I can assure you and anyone else that the racial tension in Cincinnati is relegated to some fairly specific neighborhood blocks. Most of the riot was the result of outside agitators coming in to organize and manipulate the poor black neighborhoods. |

Actually, the first Hustler Club was in downtown Cincinnati. My grandmother used to tell me stories about how she would be in Izzy Kadetz's deli when he used to call the cops on Flynt because he'd stick a girl in the window dancing during lunch hour so Izzy's clientele could see. The cops would show up and make Flynt take the girl out of the window, so he started putting closed circuit cameras on the girls dancing on the stage with the monitor in the window. |

I owned a house in Norwood for a while. It all depends what part. Hyde Park area is so expensive that people are (were back then anyway-1998 or so) starting to spread into some of the nice older houses in Norwood. I am not sure if it continued this way or not. I think I would rather live out a ways. If I ever moved back, I would live in Indiana and drive 30-45 minutes to work in Cincinnati so I could be out in the country. |

Lots of racial tension. Lots of murders. The city council is a joke. If you work in the city limits there is an income tax of about 2%. I read somewhere that they do have some city-specific gun laws. They have been discussing a citywide smoking ban. That said, the general area around Cincinnati is really nice. |

Surounding burbs are great, very coservitive and for the most part gun friendly. Newport KY is great but downtown sucks. You can be out in the boonies from downtown in 30 or so minutes. Racial tensions are high, personally I think it comes from the fact that we are right on the border from north to south, and the division within the city remains deep. Rush hour traffic can be a drag but ive never lived anywhere else so ive got nothing to compare it too.

I didn't even realize how many gosh dang people and counties there were in Ohio until last years election.
Is there even parts of Ohio that are truely the "boonies" with all those people? Living 20 miles out of the burbs does not count. |
