My best guess from being around USMC fighter pilots and crashes my whole life:
Were mockdogfighting, one lost sight, didnt call No Joy, and they made contact Or Were joining up in formation and got too close. I think the first one is more logical. |

Very sad.
I know the officer who handed the folded flag to one of the Marine's nine year old daughter. He had served in his squadron. Pretty fucking heartbreaking. |

That night they crashed had one of the worst dust storms I have seen here in my 9 months here. Usually when they fly overhead there is no hot dogging, they just fly straight across. From the way I have personally witnessed their flying over here I would go with choice #2, joining up in formation and got too close. Since the incident the wingman is WAY behind the lead pilot instead of a few hundred feet. |

That WAS a pretty bad dust storm that night. Our scouts were part of site security during the recovery, which I heard was not a pretty sight. My heart goes out to those pilots' families.
