Considering a move to Shreveport...any suggestions on where to live, where to shoot, etc?  I have family that lives there, but I've only spent a few days in the town, and don't really have a feel for it.  How about nearby hunting?  Small game?  Fishing?  Canoeing?

I posted this to the Gulf states forum as well, but it doesn't look like there's a whole lot of traffic there.

But housing is dirt cheap, compared to where I live.

I was there for a bit last year. Way to hot down there for me... My plane landed around midnight, it was 103, and not that sissy out west heat either, drown in it kind!

Thanks - I'm thinking of visiting during the mudbug festival later this month, and wanted to check out some areas to look at on the web for housing.  Appreciate it!

I know you guys get a lot of humidity...I know what that's like from growing up outside of St. Louis.  It'll be tough moving there from the Colorado high desert, though....we drip water through pads in front of huge fans to cool our houses by *adding* humidity (swamp coolers).

I used to go to Shreveport every so often to visit my grandparents (now deceased).  Not sure where to look for housing nowadays.  But, for shooting there's always the short drive to Princeton to go to the Miculek's/Clark's range:

Bang Inc.

And, as someone else pointed out, it's not a very long trip to the Toledo Bend reserves for hunting and fishing, although that's not the only good location around.

New 2nd Lt Here,
(0-1 for 4 days now!)

I was wondering where good apartments were located in Shreveport.  Also, where would be some good places to live within 20min of Barksdale AFB?

Thanks

No they were just teasing you; if they really wanted it, they would have took it and anything else they wanted.  I've heard they're not as bad as Alaskan mosquitos though.

Hi, all,

Well, me, I recommend the serious burbs.  Blanchard, Benton, Mooringsport, or just get out in the parish, some place like that.  Shreveport has crime problems as well as some other stuff that goes along with it, and one of the more idiotic city councils in America.

If you want to be in the city, Bossier City isn't bad, at least not as bad as it was when ETH went to Byrd!  BTW, ETH, my dad's a Byrd grad.  But a few years ahead of you.  He used to like to put cherry bombs in the toilets at Byrd and flush 'em down.

Hunting/fishing is good there.  As far as ranges, I can just head over to my uncle's house.  He has a 100 yard range over off to the side of the house.  Miculek is good people and he has a range.

ETA:  I didn't see the canoeing part.  I used to canoe on Caddo and Cross Lakes.  If you want moving water, the Red River is navigable again in parts, and you can always go to Arkansas and canoe the Buffalo and White Rivers.

Thanks y'all!  I'm in Shreveport right now.  My brother and parents live in Broadmoor (at my brother's house right now)....any suggestions on places to visit?  Anyone know of CPA jobs available?  ;)

It's a bit warm, but I hear I'm in the worst of it.  It actually hasn't bothered me....I've lost 100 lbs since I was here last 4-5 years ago, and the 97 degree weather is no problem for me now (I'm pretty damned skinny at this point).

I'm planning on spending the next two days passing out resumes, and have a couple interviews already scheduled.

Yep, we're moving to Shreveport in the next few months.  Thanks for the info everyone - we're moving to the Broadmoor or Broadmoore Terrace area with a target date of around the end of September/beginning of October.

Looked at Fort Worth, TX, just seemed too damned big.  And too much traffic, eh.

Wow, can't believe real estate prices down there - far less that 1/2 the price here.  The house that my wife is sold on for a mere $155k would go for over $400k here.  And I expect to make about $35-40k more then here in the Grand Valley.  The scenery isn't quite as nice, but $35-40k pays for a lot of air conditioning!

Anyone in the Shreveport/Bossier area, give me a shout - I expect to be in the area again next month (at the end of August) for more interviews.  We are planning to move to Shreveport in September.

Oh, and woohoo!  They now have a Hooters!  Spent a few evenings there, as well as the Buffalo Hot Wings place on the new riverfront area.

Prost,

Dave

I would stay on the West side of the Red River.

Go down Youree Drive, past Southfield Road, and you will find a whole bunch of fine apartment complexes!

Especially just South of LSU-Shreveport!

To get to Barksdale AFB, just go across the Gov. Jimmy Davis Red River Bridge and scoot up Hwy 71 (Barksdale Blvd) to the Base!

Less than 10 miles, max!

BTW, there will be lots of pretty young co-eds that will be living in those aparetments just South of LSU!

Leave them alone!

Eric The(They'reAllMine)Hun

Dead on as always Eric.  Places to shoot Caddo Rifle and Pistol(Haughton, Im a member) and Shooters USA(Bossier).

Just got back tonight from a second trip there.....bought a house down there last week, and looks like I'll have a couple of job offers coming this week.  We close on our new home at the end of September.

Bought a home in the Town South area - just south of LSU on Youree - couldn't believe the cheap price of $169k for a 2100+ square foot house in a great area!  My wife is excited - we're tossing/selling all of our furniture up here, and buying all new stuff down there.

So, what are the local ranges like?  I hear Jerry Mikulec has a range within 10 miles or so of Shreveport - anybody ever shot there, is it his personal range where he only does classes, or what?

Mattl & ProfessorChaos, maybe we'll have to meet up sometime so I can find out whre to go shooting & fishing.  Thanks to everyone for their info!

Prefect (ETH, them gals in those apartments south of LSU are now MINE!)  ;)  OK, nevermind, they're yours....I'm married......

I am a native of Shreveport and graduated from C. E. Byrd High School there back in 1970!

I agree that Boadmoor is a great neighborhood to live in, pretty affordable, and has great schools.

Anything South of Kings Highway and East of Line Avenue is considered pretty safe territory!

If someone tells uyou that they have a lovely house for you up on 'the Cooper Road', tell them thanks, but no thanks!

Plenty of stuff to do around Shreveport!

It is located in the 'Sportsman's Paradise', after all!

Eric The(LouisianaMan)Hun

Another damn Byrd graduate. The 1st question people in Shreveport asked me when I met them, where did you go to high school?.  10-50 years later, graduating from Byrd high school seemed to be the most important event in their entire lives, even over God, family and job. I've never seen anythying like it. Like they were all interlinked.

When they found out I was not a native of Shreveport, I was nada in their eyes, even people who worked for me.

Loved Toledo Bend. Fished there 48 out of 52 weekends every year for two years.

I've never shot there, but there used to be an indoor range at 357 Magnum Drive in Bossier City.
