AOW = Any Other Weapon. It covers any oddity out there; smooth bore firearms that aren't legal shotguns, firearms without a grip, pistols with two grips, "gadget guns" like cane guns, pen guns, and umbrella guns...
Stuff like that.
The advantage is that they can be transferred for only a $5 tax instead of a $200 tax. (However, it's still $200 if you build one yourself. Have a licensed Class II build it for you and then transfer it to you for the $195.00 savings.) In addition, AOW's aren't subject to the '94 Crime bill. (As an example, you can't build a normal AR-15 pistol anymore unless you drill out most of the weight to get it under 50 oz, build a carbon fiber model, weld on the magazine, etc. However, if you add a foregrip, it becomes an AOW
and is fine! No welding magazines in place, no drilling it out to get below the 50 oz weight limit, etc.!)
HTH!
