Everytime I go to the range I am the only one with a post-ban rifle. When I ask others about their pre-ban configured rifles they say they are post-ban lowers with pre-ban parts. Is this common practice? Am I the only sucker with a post-ban configured rifle?

This range you go to is in California, near L.A., where you go to school.
California has very restrictive rules about AR15s.
Of course you know all of this, because you have one yourself.
Have you registered yours?

I said my post-ban was configured as a post-ban. How is that breaking the law? I'm 22, and have only had my AR for about a year and a half. I guess if I was a 40 year old sister humpin', sheep lovin' redneck I would have known what a troll is.

Mmm..using Major Murphy's intel,I have come to the conclusion that either you are
1.bullshitting about your experience, and don't own an AR,but you do want one
OR
2.you are trying to get info to nail somebody.
As for your question,it would be "wrong" to put "assault weapon" features such as a "bayonet lug" or a "retractable stock"
you would probably not get in trouble, but you would probably feel very,VERY bad about yourself, and you'll wanna take them off right away!

School boy,

Your post went like this:

"I'm like you guys, I have gun too.
Mine legal.
I see many law breakers at L.A. ranges.
I don't break law.
Do you?"

So to answer your question, YES, you are a sucker.
Be cool like those other guys and put pre-ban parts on your post-ban lower.
It's no big deal, everyone does it(except me).
Good luck.

I do own an AR. I purchased an ASA stripped lower in November of 1999. The last day to purchase an "assault weapon" in CA was Dec. 1999. The last day to register them was Dec. 31 2000

Burn, in the City of Chico, California, it is a $500 fine for setting off a Nuclear device within the city limits.

Sometimes you guys are a little uptight, explain to him the laws instead automatically assuming that he is a troll.  Sure, it is easy to break the law putting together one of this rifles, but that is his ass if he does it.  Maybe he is wondering exactly what you can do so that it is legal.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt; you have given me no evidence that you're "trolling" the board, so here goes.

Is this common practice?  NO.
Is this illegal?  YES.
Do a few people do it?  YES.
Do they usually get caught?  NO.
Does this mean you should try it yourself?  That's up to you.

Most police officers do not know and/or do not care well enough what a pre-ban profile looks like.  If you come across one that does, there's a fair chance he'll confiscate it and you'll face a little time + some charges (I don't know the penalties), or there's an equally fair chance he's one of those "I don't care, you haven't committed a crime with it, so carry on" guys.  Depends on his attitude, opinions, rational mindset, if he has indigestion at the moment - lots of things.

If being a "sucker" as you call it keeps you legal, then by no means should you make an illegal configuration b/c you want to conform.
Besides, didn't anybody tell you that pre-ban parts were...

It seems a bit suspicious for somebody to ask a qustion like that regarding something one already knows is illegal.

With some rifles (like Colts) it is hard to tell the difference between post-ban and pre-ban without analyzing the serial numbers and knowing what the cut-off dates are.

You run a risk breaking the law, but if you want to have a neato flash suppressor on your evil assault weapon go for it.

You might want to be more careful of the questions you ask of anti-socialists.  We're a bit cautious of the BATF, especially after that little Waco incident B)

Come to Canada! land of the pre-ban! (since we never had a ban its all cool)
we got threaded barrels
7 inch AR barrels
difference is we don't have pre ban mags, everything is 5rds unless its bolt action
also! no machine guns unless you bought it before something like 1986
also no bullpup weapons but folding stock is A ok.
overall you people are better off.
