The Clarion-Ledger
A nine-year Jackson police officer was fatally shot and the suspect killed Thursday afternoon after the officer apparently attempted to stop a stolen vehicle.
Thomas Catchings, 40, died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen around 4:40 pm. Thursday during surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. His alleged shooter, Omar Hampton, 18, of 5515 Shaw Road, was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m. at the hospital. He was shot three times.
Grief-stricken officers and officials, including Police Chief Robert Moore and Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson, gathered at the hospital.
"Its a very sad day for us," Moore said. "Our prayers go out to the community and family."
Police spokesman Robert Graham said the shooting happened about 3 p.m. near Lindsey and South drives. Catchings was among some of the department's motorcycle patrol officers who had been training in the area.
After training, Catchings spotted a white Ford Mustang that matched the description of a car that had been carjacked in the area around 2:30 p.m., Graham said.
Catchings radioed dispatchers and told them he was following the car, Graham said.
But other officers started looking for Catchings after they tried to contact him and he didn't respond.
Moments later, Catchings was found lying on South Drive. Feet away, a man later identified as Hampton was lying on the ground near a white Ford Mustang that had veered into a ditch on South Drive.
"From the preliminary investigation, it appears the suspect vehicle had either stopped or ran off the road into a ditch and the suspect got out," Graham said. "The suspect then shot the officer and the suspect also was shot."
