For regular unleaded.

2.09 near me, but 1.95 (burbs) is the lowest in the Chicago area, and 2.45 (Chicago & Evanston) is the highest according to www.chicagogasprices.com I pay even more because my car has one of those "Premium Unleaded Only" engines.

What're you paying?

I don't pay attention,  I have to buy it reguardless of price so why worry over it.
And I buy gas when I need it,  I don't drive 10 miles and waste a gallon of gas to save  $.05/gal like some of my coworkers do.

I wasn't planning on trying to find the cheapest so I could drive 500 miles to fill up, I just wondered how the price varied from place to place.

I see CA is way above the rest. Is that because of state tax on gas there?

CA state tax is 26.2¢/gal. Illinois is 19¢/gal, and an extra 6¢ in Cook County and 5¢ in city of Chicago. (i.e. Chicago residents pay extra 11¢/gal.) I guess that puts Chicago's 2.45 gas price about even with you Cali folk.

State by state gasoline tax rates

Highest state gas tax is WI @ 31.1¢/gal. Next is RI at 31¢/gal.

Lowest is Georgia at 7.5¢/gal, but there's an extra 4% sales tax on top of that so ~7.8¢
AK is second lowest at  8¢/gal.

Federal Excise Tax on gas is 18.4¢/gal nationwide, and not factored in with the state rates above.
