I've seen and read many times of people who have a few guns they refer to them as a "collection".
To me a collection would start at 5 or more. |
I would say as soon as you own more than one gun that fulfills the same role.
Two handguns, two shotguns, etc etc. |
100 - If it ain't into 3 digits, it ain't a "collection."
An old-timer gun enthusiast I knew had a different standard. He always said, "If you don't have at least one for every year you've been on this earth, you shouldn't consider yourself a "collector"..." I like my standard better. |
I hold my nose up at your defined amount. Seriously, it kind of depends. If you have one each: CCW gun, target gun, hunting shotgun and clays shotgun, that desn't seem like a collection. If you have different collective branches of your guns, like "The C&R's", "The AR's", "The Commies" , "The CCW's", "The Target Guns", you are there. |

I think the ARFCOM answer is 2, a .38 and a 10-22 will make you a collector
My answer is what ever number of guns it was that I lost in a tragic boating accident... |
I've often wondered that myself.
Although my pre-boat accident roster of firearms was quite large, I never considered it a collection 'cause so few could be considered collectable. And there was no "theme" to my cache of arms. No "rifles of American wars" or "cowboy" firearms. Just a bunch of assorted guns. |
Didn't ya'll read the Handgun control thread? Over 1 is an "Arsenal."

Collection |

A good start... |

You have a 10/22 so you are halfway there. |
I'd say 2, as long as they were collectible. I have a lot of guns, but none of them are collectible.
Just because I buy 100 stamps and put them in my desk drawer, I do not have a stamp collection. |
you are a wise man. |
Whatever amount the MSM will call it a stockpile not a collection.
I think it depends a lot on why you buy them.
If you buy/build guns that you dont need but just want to have because they're neat or different or cool or old or rare, then you are collecting. Most of my guns fall in those categories so I would think I collect guns, ergo I have a collection. A few are dedicated to the self defence role. |
So, one EBR and a couple of mags is now a collection? |
Yes. |
+1 More politically correct as well versus using terms like "Armory". |
Depends where you're from. In Massachusetts, it doesn't take much for the news media to declare an Arsenal.

When you lose count of the number, or you look at the group and just count "pretty many". Also when you find guns you forgot about, especially after you just bought one like it to fill the gap.
I use "accumulation," as that implies I don't have to be too neat. |
As soon as redundancy in terms of practicality comes into play.
Such as...having an AR and a AK. Basically redundant. The start of a collection. |
*if you own 1 - 5 guns your a beginner gun collector
*10 - 16 guns is average *20 plus is more advanced *50 + is old timer |
The law in canada is 10 or more firearms makes you a collector !
I've never been interested in having a collection. Collections are for collectors.
I want an arsenal. Liberal asshats and impending tragic boating accidents seem to threaten the status of my arsenal every day. |
Well if you live in NY and you own any thing more than 1 I guess its not a collection.
Weapons haul at Hauppauge house |
When you have enough to arm everyone in your household and both your neighbors households. That is a "arsenal"
Well by most of the standards listed, I guess I have a collection. Of course, I just had a birthday this past Monday, so I'll need to add another one to the group for that reason.....

A portion of the "collection" My babies

+1 A couple of years ago I was thinking about buying a .22 for smallbore silhouette. After thinking about options for a couple of weeks I found a Remington 581in the back of the safe. |
