OTTAWA (Reuters) - A Canadian member of Parliament charged with improving ties with the United States apologized on Thursday for saying "let's embarrass the hell out of the Americans in front of other countries."

 

The gaffe by Marlene Jennings came exactly two weeks after Canada's Liberal government irritated Washington by refusing to join the U.S. missile defense system.


Jennings -- the parliamentary secretary for Canada-U.S. relations -- reports directly to Prime Minister Paul Martin, who came to power in December 2003 saying he wanted better relations with Washington.


"I would apologize to the members in this House that my comments were a little bit exaggerated. I apologize," she told the House of Commons elected chamber of Parliament.


Jennings, who is herself half-American, accused the United States on Tuesday of refusing to adhere to trade treaties it had signed with Canada. One way to strike back, she suggested, was to shame Washington internationally.


"Let's embarrass the hell out of the Americans in front of other countries that they are attempting to negotiate with on new binational trade agreements ... let's just do it on the public scene," she told a parliamentary committee.


The opposition Conservative party, which says the Liberals have a history of needlessly antagonizing Washington, demanded that Martin fire Jennings for making her remarks at a time when the United States is blocking imports of live Canadian cattle.


"The Liberals have once again shown their anti-American bias ... This strategy is like poking someone in the eye and then asking them for a favor," Conservative legislator Diane Finley told Parliament.


Last November Martin kicked MP Carolyn Parrish out of the Liberal caucus after she stomped on a George Bush (news - web sites) doll on a satirical TV show.

That's very true, Toronto is a great party town.  I've gotten laid there on several occasions.  But apparently, unless you want a quick lay or a pick-up hockey game, Canadians aren't good for much.

A friend of mine that moved back from Calgary recently described the country as follows:

80% of the people live in the cities, they are liberal like democrats.  20% of the people live in the rest of the country, they are conservative and the finest sort.  Of the 80% that live in the cities, they all fall within 200 miles of our border.  

The hunting is VERY good and since the 80% don't know what the fuck they are missing the 20%+ the americans have the outdoors to themselves.

The 80% raise their children to think the govt owes them everything and they are not encouraged to hit the ground running, therefore the average canadian stays in the nest till they are 28 years of age.

Since the mother fucking 80% control everything taxes are very high. Yet even with high taxes things like extracurricular activities at school are paid for on top of what you already give to the govt.  There is no decent infrastructure and the road system sucks.  The govt spends tons of money on projects that show no real results.

Anti american sentiment is very high except when dealing with the 20% that treat you like a long lost brother.

He went on to say that the hunting was out standing, mule and whitetail deer, elk, moose, bear.  When hunting and camping in the country he met some of the greatest folk who were very generous as far as letting him hunt on their property and with their hospitality.

In a nutshell a paradise run by idiots.

Your friend hit the nail on the head.  I really couldn't describe it any better.  Despite the great hunting, I wouldn't move there for all the pussy and money in the world.  Thank God they don't know how great it is in the U.S. or you'd get an invasion from the north as well as the south.

I, being somewhat of Cunuck decent, have always had a hard time understanding WTF they are/were thinking, when this kind of shit goes on!

Living so near the US/Canada border, it was always a good place to go drink(at 19), and chase PIE, visit the strip clubs, and hunt (when I was younger). But through the years I've come to the understanding that (some of) the Canadians(the 20% talked about before don't count!) are kind of like the "Slow" or "SpEcIaL" relative that you pat on the head, and feed him his oatmeal, while he watches his cartoons. You don't really pay them much attention, because their thoughts/ideas don't have any basis in reality.

They have lived under the Protection of living "next door" to the ass-kickin'est nation in the world for the past 60+ years. The majority of the population has never known the fear of a WWII, or anything else. They have never needed to fear "What might happen to Us if...!" because We've been on guard 24/7/365!

I don't try to understand WTF is going on "Up There", but they are due for a big reality check. Osama & Co. don't care that they are clueless, and a beer or hockey stick ain't gonna' stop them from killing Canadians, anymore than it would Americans.

I know a few Canucks that I'd invite to My Bug out shack, but they are the exception...not the rule..... It's a sad truth...
