This evening while over at my parents house we found a bottle of Jack Daniels in the back of their kitchen closet. My parents don't drink but have kept this bottle because it was given to my dad by his first student at the university. That was in 1973... just over 31 years ago.

The question is, can you drink 31 year old bottle of burbon?
Does burbon go "bad" or "good" with age?

We are not going to open thebottle but I was just curious.

Whiskey doesn't age in glass. It doesn't deteriorate, either. IOW, it is just as it was when bottled. Therefore, if you would drink "brand new" JD, jump in. If not, leave it alone.

Once it is out of the barrel, its the same forever. Until it passes through your kidneys.

It won't 'age' anymore like they said above, but if it's been stored where it could get hot for any length of time, It might taste like shit.

In a cabinet though, It'd probably be just fine.

Ok, if thats the case. What happens when you open of bottle of whiskey, scotch, or bourbon. Can it go bad then? Whats the best way to seal them back up? I have a bottle of Dugan's Dew (scotch). The cap doesn't really screw on.

If it isn't airtight, it will go bad over time. A sealed bottle should be fine unless it was allowed to get hot (90F or above) fairly often. An opened-but-cap-tightened bottle will last a couple of years.

1) Raise bottle to lips
2) Invert bottle
3) Imbibe until uncontrollable smile appears
4) Repeat until container is empty

When my Grandfater died in '95 I found a bottle of Grand dad made in '68. I take a shot every year on his birthday and it still tastes fine. --ST

I have a 150th aniversary bottle of JD that was bottled in 2000, same year I turned 21. It will only be opened on my deathbed, and everyone will have a drink.
