One of my buds here at the office has been searching through gun stuff. The manager is a flaming lib and they're doing computer searches today. I'm already familiar with the tools-->internet options--> delete cookies, delete files, delete history buttons. However, web addresses still show up when you start typing in a URL in the address bar.
How do I go about clearing up traces of web surfing? Is there anything else I should do? Please save the morality speeches about listening to the boss. We do listen and are forced to hear about how bad it is to eat meat, why PETA is great, and how guns are bad. If you don't agree with this, don't waste your time replying as I will just disregard your post. Thanks!  Mike |

That shouldn't be happening if you delete history, mone always just shows blank. Also go into your internet options and set the days to keep pages in history to 1 or 0, that should take care of 99% of it. The only other thing that you probably don't have time for is a wipe and re-install. I'm guessing they probably block alot of the 3rd party software for such things correct? |

To stop URLs from showing up you need to turn off "autocomplete".
In the Internet Explorer toolbar go: Tools-Internet Options-Content-Autocomplete and then uncheck all the boxes. [Edited To Add: You may want to Google "Omniquad My Privacy". They offer both a freeware and a pay thingie to clean up internet tracks. Also consider using firefox because you can erase cookies, etc. with only a couple of mouse clicks.  ] |

Lol, I dont buy the origional story. 99.9% of "computer searches" are done behind the scene at the first point that the WAN meets the LAN.

I use Window Washer, and use it often. And it is good for your computer. Cleans out the trash, old tmp files, chk files, etc.

Also, good to know about the autocomplete thing. I have several URLs that still show up on my computer even after deleting history, temp files, and cookies.

Keep in mind that all of the above recommendations will only clear these footprints off the computer that was used. 100% of this same information exists at the firm's web server - directly attributable to a specific PC (by the IP address) and the user that was logged onto it.
Erasing this data off his PC isn't going to protect him from the server records - which is where sysadmins/management are going to look to see where he has been and what he has been doing. CWO |

That's all good, but if your company uses a proxy server or a firewall with decent logging, none of the other stuff will matter, unless you have a laptop and are using it from home, hotel, etc.
I just look at the firewall logs when we're trying to catch a perv. Has all the information, Perv's IP address and the IP address of the perv. website. FW log will do resolve DNS names which makes it even easier. I do happen to have a connection outside the firewall for "testing." You can guess what website I use for testing.  Check out your company's computer use policy. Often they are pretty vague or non-existent. If you are going to fight disciplinary action over surfing gun websites, that'll be your best ammo., excuse the pun. |
