Parking Feud
By Kimberly Craig
Web produced by Jenny Clark
March 9, 2005

Some U.S. Marines say they were surprised by the decision made by Detroit auto workers about parking. It all started with the cars some Marines drove, and what was on them.

The words that have some U.S. Marines in shock came from the man in charge of security at the UAW Solidarity House, on Jefferson in Detroit. For a number of years now, dozens of Marine reservists have been thankful to park in the UAW’s lot for weekend training with no problem at all - until now.

Marines at nearby Marine Corps Reserve Center say on Tuesday morning, the director of security at the UAW told them that while they support the troops, Marines driving foreign vehicles or sporting a President George Bush bumper sticker were no longer welcome to park there.

U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Joe Rutledge told Action News, "We received a phone call from the UAW, who support us by letting us park down at their facility. They called and said they weren’t going to allow or they would turn away some vehicles."

A spokesman for the UAW released a statement to Action News which reads:

"While reservists certainly have the right to drive non-union made vehicles and display bumper stickers touting the most anti-worker, anti-union president since the 1920s, that doesn’t mean they have the right to park in a lot owned by members of the UAW."

As U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Lee Cooper explained, "We’re very appreciative, but on the other hand, it’s kind of discriminating between, let’s say a lance corporal going through college can only afford a 15-year-old vehicle and it happens to be a Nissan."

It is their property, and they have the right to do this, but talk about bad publicity. What a bunch of idiots.

I quit my job operating for the Airlines because of the unions. I live in SE Michigan and the UAW Unions are terrible group of people. I feel sad for them...I really do.

And being a former Marine, I will  keep this in mind next time I need a new car....

Two can play at this game.  Boycott union made products. Since they don't support our troops.  lol.

The result of actions like this are counter productive for the unions.

With this political statement, they will permanently etch the "not worth owning" determination in the minds of many.

The main reason I left AT&T/Lucent/Avaya for Sun is to get away from that damn union.  I swear the little paper they publish and send to your house reads just like Mao's little red book.  My experience with Unions makes me hate them with a passion.  One thing you can count on is that behind any rabid union supporter is a lazy bastard with zero ambition.

It's easy to boycott union made products.  They are usually much more expensive and poorly made.

It's sad too.  American workers can be, and usually are, the most productive workers in history.  But the union mindset, "it's not my job" and the "I should be paid $30/hr to screw lugnuts onto a tire" has taught the auto-worker that excellence at work is not necessary.

It's sad, and one of the reasons that American companies are moving jobs overseas.

I think the Marines need to exercise their right to encourage their men and women NOT to buy products made by leftists.

Looks like I'll have to buy a non-union made Nissan, built in Smyrna, TN.

I've got a co-worker who got in trouble a few years ago at EDS because he dared to move the computer monitor on his desk from one side to the other.  He had to move it back and wait for a union worker to come and move it.  He said he knew right then that it was no place for a career.

Speaking of the papers and magazines they publish, last Fall I really enjoyed getting all those flyers in the mail claiming John Kerry would protect my huntin' and gun-ownin' rights....paid for with my union dues...

Oh, and one more thing...

BONEHEADS!!!!

I had civil service guys working for me when I was in the USAF.  They tried to use the U-word on me.  Most military supervisors were intimidated by it, but my copy of the memorandum of agreement was heavily highlighted.

When they said, "We'll go to the union..." I said, "Let's dance!" and headed over to the civilian personnel office.

The next day they were sooooooo polite to me!

I wonder if they actually want to boycott "foreign" cars or if they just go by brand name.  For instance, my Honda was made in Tennessee (good American car) and my Buick was imported from Canada (bad non-American foreign car).

Which one of these do you think they'd let park in their lot?

No, what really sucks is that their "Union Breatheren" is building HMMWV for the Marines (and other Armed Forces branches) right now.

Depends if you call Saturn ( GM/Toyota) American. Every automaker  is a global marketer now, there really is no foreign/domestic anymore.

I work for EDS.  The equipment moving rule was for workers on GM property.  The reason why the Michigan economy is in the tank has much to do with the UAW.  Soon it will stand for U Ain't Working.

Just a question.. How many of you have actually worked a union job? Not lived next door to a guy whose barber was union. But actually worked the job yoursel. I worked union for 39 years, and I never never saw some of the things you say you saw. Sure there is probably corruption, I do not doubt that for a second. But the benifits outweigh the bad 5 to 1.  I think some of you will see what the world is like one day if you have to go to a job where you have to do an honest day of hard labor. Also there are jobs, very well paying jobs that you can lose your life along with 50 other men in a heartbeat if there are not a union to inforce safity, Beleive me I have been on that road

build better cars, don't punish those that choose to buy foreign, or on the flip side of the coin, can't afford to buy union made cars that keep needing to be fixed.

God how I hate this shit. Im sadly a member of the UAW BUT Im one of the vocal ones in my plant who openly despises the UAW bullshit. Lets just say I will never be eletced to a union office or an annointed job.
Funny thing is we have workers now driving foriegn made cars on the lot.
Fuck the UAW.  If they would concentrate on doing what they are supposed to do and stay out of politics I would consider reviewing my position.
I could go on for hours about the drunks and dopers and those who fuck the system for disabiliaty cause they cant make it to work,  I can also vouch that the rank and file despise the union leadership for thier trips to Vegas(how many car plants are there in Vegas?) to be trained.
I will also vouch for the overall majority of good folks who appreciate the pay and benefits and do thier jobs as best they can despite the apolitical animals called managment.

I say Fuck 'em... keep the stickers on the car and look for another parking lot...

I worked in a union job for many years... I can tell you the union never did a DAMNED thing for me! If anything, employees that DESERVED to be fired were kept on the job because of the union...
Sent me a socialist rag in the mail telling me who to vote for every few months!

I swear, thier was an all out war between management and labor.. always felt like it!

I will NEVER work for a union employer again... NEVER EVER EVER....

Lawyers and unions have spelled death to American manufacturing....
The reason foreign cars are so prevelant is due in part to the unions...

18 years in a union and I can honestly say that it is the most worthless POS, socialistic, democrat ball sucking, gun banning, welfare promoting, organization I have ever seen. While there is a lot of decent rank and file workers, the leadership is filled with absolute trash who seem to be able to read on a 4th grade level and pick their noses occasionally. They are NOT interested in the people they "represent", they are interested in the socialist drivel they spout to whoever is stupid enough to listen. And money, as in "their" money. While I will not say unions are bad, I will say that unions TODAY are. They are not what they were originally conceived to be. I do not pay some f-in union to pick my prez, tell me that abortion is great, that socialized medicine is wonderful, to donate  our money to some lazy shit who I see water skiing with bad knees who can't "work", or otherwise control my life. I pay them to represent ME, and that, they do POORLY.

newer saturns are based on opel platforms, (european)
NUMMI, new united motors manufacturing inc, is a joint toyota/gm plant, toyotas come out 1 side
gm the other,
geo is a suzuki, gm owes a piece of them, they also own interest in saab, opel, isuzu, holden(gto), and several other "foriegn" car companies

Why does the UNION own property?

How does them owning property help the workers?

Unions=Socialist.

Anyone that is a member of a union should be embarrassed.
