I have always admired shotguns for their toughness, a scope would kind of defeat that purpose. For the range that most shotguns are used at, just point and shoot, the bead/ghost ring sights are fine.

For slugs, go for a scope.

I'm waiting for my OKO to arrive for my Mossberg. I truly like the idea of placing a slug right where I want it at 100 yards.

I have a Leupold 2-7X "shotgun" scope on my 11-87 deer gun. Excellent optics, and routine 2-3 inch groups at 100 yds with sabots.

Some people have gone the scope route for turkey guns as well. Allows precise placement of your shot column.

Recently found a Browning A-Bolt shotgun, fully rifled barrel. I put 3 sabots into one ragged hole at 50 yds, but haven't had the chance to wring it out yet with a good scope. Nothing like a .70 caliber short range rifle!

If you are using buckshot, it is strictly a close range proposition. No scope needed.

Buckshot sucks for deer hunting. Most people I know who use it usually go for head shots. Little rough on antlers. Max "effective" range maybe 20 yds.

All I can say is practise practise practise!
