My nephew got a new one for Christmas. They definitely don't build 'em like they used to. It's all plastic now. No metal to cut yourself on. I used to put one knee in the back of mine and scoot around in it. I didn't even pass that on to the nephew, I didn't want to see the truck fall apart.

Ah, for the days of toys with sharp metal edges and not a thought given for safety!

Do they still make them out of metal? I remember landing right on my left knee on one. That's the first time i saw what a bone looks like.

in fact I think they had a backhoe that was purposely designed to be sat on while using it |

As I said it the last thread about these toys, my brother cut his head on the ladder of one of these so, I was kinda screwed in that I didnt get one. Although I did get Hot Wheels (When I turned 30 that is) Collecting them since.

My two daughters still play with the ones I had when I was a kid.
Hey, if anyone here knows where to get replacement rubber tracks for the bulldozers and other crawlers, drop me a line. I've eBayed and Googled the hell out of them for years to no avail, and called probably 100 toy collectors across the country looking for them. |

Cuts! Thats nothin' I broke my arm with one of those!
I had broken one arm 3 days earlier by falling out of our tree fort... (Learned a real life lesson about making sure the base of the ladder is very secure before climbing up with that one.) So while feelling sorry for myself while my buddies where off swimming I got board playing by myself in my sandbox so I decided to stand in the box of my Tonka dumptruck. Well... Of course the thing scoots out from under me and I crash down with my good arm on the side of the sandbox. Another broken arm... Another life lesson... The doctors in the emergency room were questioning me about how I keep breaking these arms... These days CPS would probably have gotten involved. Ah, the memories... Kent |

They still make them out of metal...just not 100%
My son has 2 bulldozers, 2 dump trucks, the grader, and the tracked back hoe/ front loader. and the front scoop      I don't see the grader on the Tonka website....maybe they discontinued it? |

My favorite one was the fire truck. You could attach a garden hose to the truck, and spray water out of the boom. Good fun.

Does anyone remember the commercial they did YEARS ago, Where they pushed one Tonka and one Real Dumptruck off a cliff? The real one was smashed to bits and the toy survived....great toys. Got my GF's kid one of the new ones...still has steel, but they've replaced ALOT of it with plastic.
....You CAN however still put a a G.I.-Joe in the driver's seat! |

When our third baby was born (after 2 girls) and I saw the stem on the apple, I went to the toy store and bought a T***a Dump Truck, a Thomas the Train set and a little football.
Two years (3 Christmases worth of presents) later, I can't even begin to inventory how many T***a Toys he has. |

Ha ha. I used to use one of those as transportation too. Then I grew up and realized lighting paper planes on fire and throwing them while yelling things like, "Jones! First and third engine hit by flak!" was so much more fun.

Is this for real or just a way to say the "word".  I had a backhoe you could sit in, then spin with your feet and use some levers to crank it up and down. I loved that thing, too bad I was greedy when I turned 10 and sold it at a garage sale. |

What year did they switch to plastic? I'm 28 and I had the metal tonka's as a kid.

My Tonka truck is far older than any of the ones here. Where the dark yellow paint has chipped, it's rusted. Ah, the good old days when we let our children play with rusty metal, sharp edges, hard objects, and spring-loaded devices that launched pointy objects further than two inches.

I too had the dumptruck and firengine...but the thing is you see the thing is about 3 christmas's later i got my little Bolt action Marlin .22 LR they didnt last long in my backyard.
