I know it was an AR pistol, but what type?

Tag, just because I've often wondered about the utility of such a short-barrel weapon.

I suspect its utility is better than nothing, but not by much....

Negative. It was an AR pistol of some kind.

There was some serious technical discussion about that weapon some time ago.

The concensus was, despite the 5.56 round being "crippled" ballistically by such a short barrel, the high sustainable rate of automatic fire more than compensated, making it "suitable" for it's intended roll as a CQB/PDW.

I'd like the semi-auto version... now that we can get the "non-swiss" version again!

I saw that movie before I got into firearms. Even then, I doubted the capabilities of the AR pistol.

BTW, that movie was wayyyyy too long.

W-G,

It's plenty "capable".  Just remember, it's a specific tool for a specific job.

Don't ask it to do the job of a shoulder fired weapon with a 20" barrel.  You're setting yourself up for failure there.

I understand that, Nationwide. It's just that his character carried that as his weapon even when they were out in the jungle looking for the surviving SF soldiers.

I know it would be illegal under us law to put a FVG, but I dont have to deal with US law much anymore.  Easier to get than a MP5.............

It did have a buffer tube.  But a short one.  That's the thing I noticed right off.

I have seen the movie a few time and I can say that at least it is an AR pistol and it appears to be OA93 upper.

That's more suitable BY FAR for an urban entry type application than battlefield. Like the coffee processing plant near the end.

Agreed with above, but I was watching this about a week ago, and noticed, for the first time, that the audio of that weapon sounded A LOT like Ma Deuce.

Can anyone confirm my asessment?

Please.  Nearly all movies have completely wrong sounds for the guns.  The gun noises are all dropped in during post-production using canned soundFX.  Rarely are those FX labeled anything better than "Machinegun - 10 seconds."  The sound guys have NO CLUE, and just put in whatever "feels right".  Sometimes, the director will ask for changes to enhance a certain mood or whatever, but that's about it.

That's why I was STUNNED when I saw Heat in the theater, and they had clearly recorded the actual weapons being fired on the actual locations, and used the actual sounds in most scenes.  Director Michael Mann (of Miami Vice fame, among others) really wanted to get the gun sounds right, and, WOW, he sure did.  Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, and We Were Soldiers have all helped raise the standards in this area, after those standards being so low for sooooo long.

It's enough to make you puke up your Ju-Ju Bees when you see/hear a Bruckheimer film...

I agree.  I wasn't expecting to hear a real -16 based weopn.  There is USUALLY an attempt to give good guys vs bad guys "distinctive" sounds, but C and P D was the first time I noticed the slow hammer of a .50 used, especially for a zipper like an M-16 based weapon.  Sounded funy, that's all.

Only barely, and Ridley Scott, who directed, doesn't put up with a log of Bruckheimer's crap.

I take it you've seen Independence Day and Armageddon, right?

I've seen plenty of Bruckheimer films, and BlackHawk Down is by far the best movie he ever had a hand in. Of course, Ridley Scott should receive much of the credit for this.
