IMHO .308 is the more versatile of the two (.308 vs. 30-06). I can't see taking the punishment of the 30-06 in some of my smaller .308s when I just don't have the need to shoot through brick walls or armor plates.

Au contraire! I'd hazzard to say that with the larger case capacity of the '06 it would have the edge over the
.30/06short .308 as far as versatility goes. One could make anemic loads to duplicate .308 ballistics
or one could roll a batch of loads that would exceed anything it's smaller cousin could do

The only thing going for the .308 is that my reloading books says it is the most accurate .30 caliber around. That may well be true. But that don't make it more versatile.
Oh yeah, it may have a shorter bolt, but who owns bolt rifles anyway, right?
