What kind of spotting scope(s) does the military use?  Are they the same as what the general public can purchase?

I dunno, but the "standard" in NRA Highpower is the 82mm Kowa 821M with 27x LER eyepiece. Unless you want some light little thing to carry hunting, I suggest following the Highpower example.

That's a Leupold 12-40x60mm spotting scope sitting on the ammo can behind the rifle.
I have the normal version, but they have a version with a mildot reticle for ranging.

+ 1 ... That scope with dots is the scope every sniper in theater is asking for.
